Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice!

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

Please don't do that, I have an otherwise awesome Destroyer some jackwagon did that to. It doesn't look as cool as you think it will and it takes a lot of work to repair.

ugh, really? It sounded like a good idea at the time. Never mind.

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

I just thought of a neat idea. If this is going to be a metal machine, take a blowtorch to the pickup holes before you mount the electronics. Get it just on fire then let the flames lick around the hole for a little bit while holding it face-down to let the flames lick against the body a little bit. snuff out the flames and coat it with a matte sealer. It'll leave wicked black ash trails around the pickup holes. Mount some black puppies with black poles in there with black-chrome or aged nickel hardware.

I may do something like that with my Hamer with a paint job instead of lighting it on fire.

maybe...you could do a paint job too. Or light it on fire, that's much more metal.

I have a friend that blowtorched his Epipi Les Paul and it looks badass... but that was a cheap guitar - I think I'm not donig anything to the body as far as paint goes... It looks really great the way it is... I'm just gunna clean it up and consider putting something over the really raw gashes it has (some kinda clear coat?).

I brought it into my 'guy'. I polished it up a bit - now he's going to set it up for me (the neck is just a touch warped and the frets need a LITTLE leveling). He'll finish it up for like $20... Can't beat it.

Otherwise - the guitar is in fantastic condition. I want to hear how the old pickups sound through my Mesa before moving forward... When I get it back I'm going to send you guys some more pix! Still taking suggestions. :-D

It would be pretty cool... But not on my S300. ;-)

I dunno about the pups but...

Leave that thing filthy and just clean the board and frets. That's all I'd do. Nasty guitars are cool.

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

If it were me (and it's not) I would clean it up and play the crap out of it. Find out what it is like BEFORE changing anything. You may be surprised by it as is. I cant imagine a lot of those were made. I would leave the stock tail piece and bridge alone (unless the bridge turned out to be crap) and certainly would NOT paint it! It is odd but very cool.

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

Hi. That guitar was stolen from me in 2006 in Gainesville, FL. I had the plexiglass riser made at Tim & Terry's to reduce string breakage. The hard shell case is a Guild but not the original case. Is there any chance you'd sell it back to me? It was my first guitar and I loved it. It is not replaceable to me. I'll pay any reasonable price to have it back.

The pickups shown are stock Dimarzios. The guitar is mahogany. There is some fret wear at the top of the neck and when you try to bend the 6th string, the string has a tendency to come off the side of the neck.

I hope you get your guitar back. Sucks someone stole it from you. I remember a guy I knew bought one of these used as his first electric guitar I think for $425 in the mid 90s. It was a solid guitar and played better than my Gibson SG. I was envious especially as this guy was an acoustic player and his first electric is some rare Guild I've never even heard of before and he got it for a song and a dance.

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

OP and also you elvisv2, could the bridge pickup possibly be a Super Distortion? I can't tell if it has hex poles but it looks different than the neck PAF so I suspect it might be. If so then the OP should be happy as is, as that's a great combination and will play stoner rock superbly.

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

As a Guild owner, for the neck/Rhythm position, I recommend one of the ol' HB-1 humbuckers.

Distortion set - for the tone, not the output.

Then (oh baby!)

1. Strip it
2. Saw horns to points
3. remove tail pience and drill through body for string through feruls
4. Fill unwanted holes
5 Paint black base
6. REVERSE Silverburst it. The thing will look like some kind of medieval axe. (Blood spatter optional)

*all black hardware

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

Hey - just read the Stolen Guitar post….

OP & Micheal; I will strongly encourage you guys to do the right thing and work this out.

Micheal - some proof that a) It was yours and b) It was stolen would be good
OP - Some patience before you go to work on it and some thought as to if you REALLY need this guitar IF Michael is legit

Micheal - make it a break even deal at least if he is willing, and perhaps a little something' something' for the good will
OP - be reasonable.

Good luck all!

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

Thanks. I sent the guy a personal email with details about the guitar not shown in the photos. He is now telling me that photos posted are not of the guitar he owns. :/

I would have gladly paid more than what he has into it.

^^^^^^^^

Bummer.
:(

IIRC,those had a PAF @ nk & Dual Sound(SD w/4-cond) @ the br pos.
Ebony board,too!!!

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

That's pretty much what I thought too. The OP should be set after a clean up and a set of 11s or 12s on that thing for stoner doom madness.

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

Thanks all. The guitar is registered as stolen. I'm surprised it went through a pawn shop without the serial number being run. As soon as someone runs that serial, I'll be notified as to its location. I do hope to get it back someday.

Re: Turning a beat up Guild S300-D into a thrashing death machine! Need pickup advice

So the serials don't match?

I once encountered a guy whose guitar had been stolen 30 years previously. (He knew about a dent from a Philips screwdriver on the side of the 12th fret which was not visible.) He just saw a frontal shot and recognized it. He actually paid my asking price, but I thought it was cool.

I have also had a few people try to con me out of a guitar by claiming it was stolen...

One I bought new in fact.
