UOA5 Questions

I have a question regarding this magnet purchased from Addiction FX: My experience with this mag is that while I like what it does to the eq spectrum versus a polished A5, it has much less output. So much so that neck humbuckers always seem to overpower it. They make the pickups that I was swapping them into (Custom and C/59 hybrid) sound really weak. Less output than my lower output HB's.
I was wondering whether the mags were not fully charged. Anyone else experience this?

Had the EXACT same experience with the EXACT same magnets, and company a couple of years ago. Yes, I ordered them fully charged. They implied I ruined the pickup when swapping mags. Funny that the pickup sounded fine when I put the original mag back in. They also sent incorrect mags for the other set I ordered.

But many folks are happy with the company. I'll go mojotone or elsewhere If I ever go down that road again.

Re: UOA5 Questions

Agreed. I put the original magnets in, and the pickup was back to normal. I had much better success in regards to output with their polished A2 and A4's. While I realize that the un-oriented version of A5 will knock down the output a bit, I wasn't expecting THAT much.

Re: UOA5 Questions

I've gotten dozens of magnets from Addition, including probably 20 UOA5's, and never had one that wasn't properly charged.

Re: UOA5 Questions

I have had the same results with 4 of these magnets. I am not discounting anyone's experience but just wondering if I should check with them to enquire whether or not the batch I received had any issues.

A5 is the third most powerful Alnico grade, about the DOUBLE of UOA5. If you keep an A5 p'up in the neck while swapping an UOA5 in the bridge, the neck p'up will certainly overpower the bridge; that's to be expected. That's why the recommended mag pairing for the neck is an A3, which is the weakest of all Alnico grades.

So, in this case were the expectations at fault, not the magnet, if you ask me.

HTH,

I have a UOA5 in my 59b (thanks Blueman!) and had to raise the the pickup a fair bit. No worries once it's done though!

HTH,

In my case the neck pickup was a2. A lower dcr 57 classic at 7.8. The Uoa5 went in a super 57 that was 8.7 The neck pickup sounded like a super distortion compared to the bridge with the uoa5. I put the a2 back in the uper 57 and all was right.

I later put in a a5 mag from a epiphone classic pro. It worked fine too.

The afx magnet was fubar.

Re: UOA5 Questions

sounds like the magnet wasnt properly charged alright

HTH,

Thank you. This is the clearest explanation I have gotten regarding this.
