Vinnie Vincent Sound

Re: Vinnie Vincent Sound

I met Vinnie during the Invasion tour, and at the time he had an EMG81 with two of their preamp/boost circuits added on in the VV Jackson.

Yeah I heard about the pre-amp, but I think that was only on the early Jacksons and not on the Carvin etc...or ??

Re: Vinnie Vincent Sound

Can't help much, but it's cool to see another Norwegian Vinnie Vincent fan :)

Re: Vinnie Vincent Sound

What's wrong with a little bit of Dan Hartman? Hahaha
Can't have been easy being a session musician in the disco heyday:eyecrazy:

Re: Vinnie Vincent Sound

I've bene thinking about it, and to be honest, I think that the pickup isn't that big of a deal when it comes to getting Vinnie's tone down. It's a very gained out tone, resulting in massive coloration from the amplifier. If I remember right, Vinnie used Lee Jackson's Metaltronix amps with VVI (Even though he was endorsing Carvin), but any late eighties high gain amplifier with a slightly Marshallesque voicing. You definitely need a bright sounding guitar. Something with a Floyd Rose in it would work the best, both because it adds brightness, and you need it to do all his crazy whammy stuff anyway.

However, as far as pickups do go, I think going with a bright, hi-power diMarzio is a good plan.

Re: Vinnie Vincent Sound

In general, that is a sound (IMO) very much like Mick Mars sound.... Its 85% amp. Not that that is bad at all :)

In general I would go for something along the lines of:

Bright Superstrat with Floyd (Alder, Maple or Basswood)
DiMarzio Super III
Boss OD-1 for basscut
JCM800 2203

That should surely get you in the ballpark.

Re: Vinnie Vincent Sound

Wow, never thought I'd get so many answers on a Vinnie Vincent thread... And positive answers for a change. Im used to hear not that nice thing about Vinnie.
Thank you very much.

Re: Vinnie Vincent Sound

Hey, Im new on the boards!
I've been struggling lately, trying to find a bridge pickup that would give me a tone similar to Vinnie Vincent's.
I know that there has been a thread about this before I think but yeah.
And please don't comment about how crappy his tone is or that you think he looks like a woman. Im not an expert on pickups so I'd like some help from the masters:14:
take a listen

Thx for any answers:)

This is something i've been curious about for some time. To me it sounds like it could be EMGs on the Invasion album... don't quote me on that though. Although my girlfriend's walls are compleeeetely covered with 80s posters from from old Hot Metal magazines from the 80s & has a poster of Vinnie with his Silver Jackson V & it looks like he has Seymour Duncans in it.

Yeah i'm also sick of losers talking sh!t about 80s players & 80s bands everywhere you go on forums & on the web. The internet has become just as bad as TV & radio now...maybe worse. But yeah it's pretty sad that their manhood may be threatened by guys who might play a pink guitar or whatever LOL. Seeing as unlike the people they idolize & look up to, these guys can actually play, instead of using their guitars as an accessory to go with their corpse paint or maybe their hooded skate brand jumpers & knee length shorts LOL. Those are the kind of people who go on like a $2 whore about how image is not important & image driven music is lame blah blah blah, yet they can't appreciate a good player because of their image...hypocrites.

Re: Vinnie Vincent Sound

I friggin LOVE Vinnie V, esp w the ankh makeup . I didn't know who he was when I went to meet them at autograph signing on Creatures tour but he looked wicked cool up close. That nite I loved the show becuz he and eric updated the skills , and the Creatures songs live were great alongside the classics. He was the first guy I saw after Randy to play a Jackson AND a major first at introducing the world to EMG81s . On his solo album it's very clear about Emgs, no pedals, no keys, etc . However you'll notice he seems to have duncans in his instructional vid. Btw wolf Hoffman switched to emgs after seeing him. IMO, I was craving his sound and on my tubeking I jacked the mids past half and got as close to his tone as I needed becuz that pedal has a unique boxy mid control. Myself I don't think Emgs are essential to his at all, so if you don't find out what duncs he used, I'd sheepishly suggest JB for that solid listenable boxiness. And try dialing out bass and boosting mids. And if you learn to all those outsidethescale notes he finds, good luck I corporating his chicken pickin style of accenting. Here's a scale I learned watching him: yknow diminished is every third fret or semitone, augmented is every fourth. Try playing every fourth, third, fourth, third, fourth, third etc. Kinda like an extension of a maj7 9 chord. VV is no slouch, excess outside the bounds of most folks taste, but a pro at outside notes, 70s chordal , and a monster chickenpicker.

Re: Vinnie Vincent Sound

That being said, re: yr question, he started w duncans in kiss, but switched to emg81, which got the Accept guy to switch to them (from Bill Lawrence-btw an alltime classic tone medal should go to WHoff for BallstotheWall)when he toured w kiss, in germany 1983 i think . He overtly per his liner notes used them on his first solo lp (no effects,) but by the time his instructional video comes out, it's after his 2nd lp, and he is using SDunc again. Also , I think Grover Jackson once said VV played a Jackson made for RandyRhoads . This is 1983 mind you- us Rhoads fans were awed to see one for the first time. So hunt down Grover for the scoop.
