Warmer toned speakers?

Aye, owning all these amps is nickel and dime'n me to death, but it's so much fun! Anywho, I've been toying around w/ my Blue Angel, and it's sort of a brighter amp. Not Fender bright, but in that vein. It sounds awesome right now w/ either the stock C90 that it's in it. Tried it w/ a an Emi Wizard and that makes piercingly bright. Emi Swamp Thang is good, but I'd like a little more of the mid punch that the Swamp Thangs scoop out. I was thinking possibly a Cannabis Rex, but I'm not sure. So what are some warmer toned speakers. Brand doesn't matter. I just don't want to spend a lot either. Trying to save up for a pair of EVM12L's for Rectifiers at the moment as well. Say my limit is $150 shipped. Where should I start?

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

texas heat is plenty warm with with a good mid punch (but not muddy) so I'll have to second that recommendation.

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

Both V12's and TH's are solid recommendations, G12-65 would be too, but that's mo money.

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

I have a Cannabis Rex in my 2x12 cab, along with a Private Jack, which is more of a greenback style. Both of them sound really great. The CR is where the magic comes in though. If you're looking for something with a very BALANCED top end, then the CR will do the job. It's also got a wonderful low-midrange that gives the neck pickup of my telecaster a wonderful thump (I'm playing through a '66 Bandmaster head)
As far as having MORE midrange though, the CR might not be the speaker for you. The Private Jack might serve you better. If you're not sure, Try here. http://www.eminence.com/guitar-bass/ and use the "pick your sound thing on the righthand side of the page.

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

WGS Retro 30 and Reaper HP. Perhaps the Veteran 30 as well, but I haven't tried it personally. I have a 2X12 cab with Celestion V30 and G12H and decided to make up a cab w/ WGS speakers that was similar. WGS claims their Retro 30 and Reaper HP are the counterparts to these Celestions. They are, however, much warmer; not better nor worse, just different.

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

Jensen 50W Jet Falcon's are nice fat, sweet sounding speakers that are pretty warm (hemp cones). Scooped mids but not overly so & at $50.00 or so a piece, they're great value too. A friend of mine has a pair of them in an Orange 2x12 & that thing sounds awesome with his Tiny Terror..really fattens things up.

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

Go with the c-rex. I always wanted that amp & had a lot of other boogies. I still have a mid 90's black shadow out of a 1/12 around here. plus a few emi & a greenback around. I also have a g70m modern lead from 1990. that I blew out & had it reconed for 35$ in mid 90's by a place out of shy town area. & it is fantastic. but I know point I been lookin at ev for the 1/12 extentision cab for years.

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

Well so far there's 3 votes for the Texas Heat, 2 votes for the legend and some single votes for the V30(I think Jeff?), WGS Reaper & Veteran, and Jensen something or other. Almost forgot the 1 vote for the Cannabis Rex.

Believe it or not...I've not tried this this amp w/ my V30 loaded Recto Cab or my Avatar cab that has Carvin labeled Emi legends in it lol. At least not to my recollection. I still don't have my Marshall cab all loaded up yet...yes I'm a slacker...I realize this.

Any other votes of confidence? Right now I'm leaning towards the Texas heat.

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

The Cannabis Rex is a killer speaker, my CRex-loaded 1x12 has been my go-to cabinet for the past few months.

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

The Texas Heat will definitely tame the top end but if you want that British upper mid snarl like the Wizard the Heat is not the speaker in my opinion. They are discontinued, but a Tonespotter from the Eminence would serve you better IMO

What amp are you running into it?

Yup H30...70th anni

If the power handling was higher, it would probably be my first choice. I mainly run the Blue Angel in the simul class setting though and that's around 40 watts I think.

There's nothing I like about the Wizard with this amp. It's really kinda harsh. I like the Swamp Thang, but it doesn't have enough mids and takes away from the amp's natural sparkle.

If you think the Swamp thing takes away sparkle, you definitely don't want the Heat in my opinion.

Don't take me so literally. Are you looking for a British vibe? If so the Patriot series is not what you are looking for in my opinion. A Private Jack perhaps? You might consider the Mojotone British series as well

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

I really really like the C. Rex . . . running it with a Traynor YCV40 (kinda a knockoff bassman circuit). It's warmer toned, but not dark, not muddy.

Re: Warmer toned speakers?

I should have explained that better. It's not that the Swamp Thang has taken away the sparkle of the amp, it's just that the bass over powers everything and kind of drowns it out. Plus it has almost no mids to it at all. So basically I'm looking for a Swamp Thang w/ less bass and more mids. After doing a bit more research I think the Cannabis Rex might be more a long the lines of what I want or I may have to end up mixing some speakers to get it where I want it.
