I replaced my TS9 with a TS Mini a few months ago and while I like it I think I can do better than it.

Which do you prefer? A TS or a Way Huge Green Rhino?

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

IMO, the more you modify a tube screamer, the less it's a tube screamer. Not that it's bad, but just understand where you are going. The Green Rhino has a great 100Hz control that can restore some of the bass that is rolled off in the standard circuit. Of course, sometimes that rolled off bass is just what's needed to tighten bass. Other times it thins out the tone too much if the drive from the pedal is your main rhythm tone. It's a great pedal though, definitely worth a try in your rig.

FYI, there is the mkI version and the new mkIV version that is smaller with some tweaks.

I like to compare gear to food.

A TS-9 is the dollar menu burger that you can get in every town for a low price. The Green Rhino is the smaller, higher-quality chain that you see in a lot of towns and is worth the extra 30% investment.

But i eat organic and non-GMO so i use handmade boutique pedals :smokin:

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

First, let me ask a question.. How do you like the mini vs the reg?? Isnt the mini supposed to have the coveted chip in it?

Now, Green Rhino Vs... Well, its really preference. I traded my TS for a GR on my board. The GR obviously is in the same vein, but slightly different. So, having said that, tho Rhino isn't exactly the same, obviously, but it puts me in the same ballpark and affords me the extra tweakablity.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

In my experience, I've found I prefer the Rhino, but it kind of depends on what you want. I thought it was great for humbuckers, but I could see how one might prefer the GR for single coils and a TS for HB's.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

I may have to try it. The TS Mini is nice and I do like it, bit it seems to be lackong something. It does have the coveted chip but it is all board mounted now so it is not 100% exact.

We shall see. I need to play with the new pickups more as well and see how all of it works together. The stacking with a Soul Food is a nice gain though.

Things to consider. Thank you.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

I love the TS9, but I'm an old man. As I tell everyone - there are so many variations, there is BOUND to be one that is a little more whatever for you personally. +/- gain , bass, miss, treble something...

My ears had 20 years of TS9 before all the extra whatever's showed up, so I don't care. But I also say I'd get a DX9 Turbo these days....

+1 Last week I was in Ljubljana and I scored DX9 for 110 euros. Basic Tube Screamer and three other modes. I like it.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

Currently I'm using 2 different TS style pedals. One, voiced more traditionally (Joyo Vintage Overdrive), the other (TL Pedals TL-808) is voiced so as not to lose as much bass and the mid bump covers a wider range of the spectrum.

The Joyo sounds better with darker guitars like my '73 SG Standard. The TL-808 sounds better with my brighter toned guitars like my 2008 Gibson SG Special. I also really like the Visual Sound Route 808. I think I may grab one soon. Seems to me that the local Truetone/Visual Sound dealer us clearing them out cheap.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

I'd pick our 805 Overdrive over both. Active tone controls and more gain range (while still covering regular TS tones).

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

The Joyo looks nice for what it is but longevity is important to me with my gear. Not sure Joyo has been around long enough to test that.

I have considered the 805, but I need to find one used first. No one around me stocks it and I would rather test it out and not pay full retail to do so.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

I saw a used 805 the other day. I'm happy with the pedal I bought, but I still wish there'd been an 805 handy when I was in green-pedal acquisition mode.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

I may keep an eye out for one. Seems like a fun green box.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

If I found a used 805 I'd provably go for it. But I find they're like the Truetone/Visual Sound pedals. I know they sold lots around here, but you never see them go up for sale. It's a pretty good indicator of what people think if them.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

I've delved pretty deep in this area, owning a vintage TS9, Handwired TS808, Green Rhino, and it's cousin, the Overrated Special..... not to mention several Fulltone FDII.

I think the TS was a great circuit, and it has a sound that I love with a strat into a Fender. It's a flutey midrange tone that's unmistakable. I love it's signature sound.

That said, the improvements made on the TS circuit are good ones, and pedals in this vein may work better for you. I like the GR, but it can be a bit bloated and compressed with some rigs. But it does sound rich and fat.

Owning a lot of OD pedals is fun. It's a great lesson in the nuances of gain.

Re: Way Huge Green Rhino vs Ibanez Tube Screamer

The 805 is definitely a cool pedal. From what I can tell, it would be the pedal to have when you don't know what tone you want. Active EQ and gain range says flexible to me.

The mini sounds close to an 808. I liked it enough to sell my TS9. The more I mess with stacking the gain with a Soul Food the more I like it.
