the only problem with a strat is that the controls are on the path of obliteration when you have a string crippler by picking hand (as i do), due to that i consider the super teles (ala telegib) far better for metal than superstrats, also others that take a beating are the flying v's, about anything shaped like a flying v takes a beating like a champ, add a vote for the explorer and put in the ml and ibanez xiphos, both x shaped guitars have the controls away from your picking hand so you don't destroy them but also near enough for quick reaching.

seriously, i don't understand why there are so many superstrats and so little superteles......

Ppl who grew with strats have not even noticed. Knobs on the strat are exactly where they are supposed to be. Flying V's are fragile, I once saw a flying V falling from the stand -> breakage at the neck joint.
About super teles, there was Ritchie Kotzen, John5 and Jim root, but those can't compete with Yngwie, Blackmore, Hendrix, Uli Roth, and the rest of legend... Simply strats were the weapon of choice in the 70s. Superstrats took off from there in the 80s.

My .02 cents, for what you're looking, would be a telecaster or an explorer depending whether you want a set neck or not. Seems like you're interested in an explorer tho. I had one a loonnngg time ago, it definitely felt sturdy as f*** haha.

Ibanez RG 421. HH, mahogany body, fixed bridge. Guarantee to deliver metal as it should be. And it's very cheap you won't be afraid to crap the hell out of it.

Was gonna 2nd a DeLonge Strat,also,but not sure if you'd planned on doing something within the stable...

Got a Warmoth Strat HT body I can part with,tho...

I'd vote for a 90's SG-1, they came with a HB (instead of p-90) Usually with a Tuna Matic and stop tail, too. There's a couple on the bay right now, but apparently I'm not smart enough to add links from my phone...
Also, try to find an "Epiphone 57 Reissue" LP-Jr, they're every bit as good as the Gibson ones (other than the shape of the headstock, and the P-100). I had one, they're very, very nice, and 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a Gibson.

Explorer or Shechter S1. Best part of the S1 is that you can replace them for a couple hundred bucks on the used market at just about any time. I swapped a strat for one and was shocked at how good it was.

Something WITHOUT a tilt-back headstock.

My vote is for a Tele. A Tele is not just a guitar, but a near indestructible weapon as well. There's a vid of Keith Richards whacking a stage jumper with his Tele, then going right back to playing.

A good idea for the SG metal guitar idea is what Phil X has - an LTD Viper, remove all but the bridge pickup and volume control, be creative in covering the new holes, and start playing.

If you don't like Floyd Rose bridges, then get something with a Gibson logo. I've had my SG for a long time now and I used it in my Grindcore band. It's had more beer spilled on it, more blood on it and been rammed up against more cabinets for "dat feedback brah!" than I can count. It's still here, sat in it's case, constantly knocking on the top saying, "Yo, we doin this? Hello? You still there? Hey! Let's go man, I wanna rock out!"

If you like Floyd Rose bridges, as I do, then go for anything with a Jackson or ESP-related logo. Get the best guitar you can get for your budget though. I have Jackson USAs and ESP Japans that I will never get rid of. Ever. I do baby the a lot more than my old SG though, that's for sure! If I was going more towards the import line, it's much of a muchness. Quality-wise they are similar, just get something you like the look of. Just make sure you spend as much as possible on the guitar, regardless of the pickups. As in, don't go for a cheaper guitar with the assumption you'll use some of your budget on pickups. It's not worth it to compromise and none of these guitars come with pickups so bad that they need to come straight out!

Picked this up on Friday for $150 AUD with the P90 Super Distortion already in it.
Set neck is slim and fast with great access, two piece centre jpined body and very well made.
It's virtually brand new with plastic still on the guard and covers and no marks on it anywhere.
Wasn't sure about the bridge but intonates very well and I'll just rock the hell out of it as is.
Might just get a tortoise guard for it.

My old Ibby DT-250 took quite a beating and always kept going. It felt like a tank. They used to be dirt cheap on eBay a few yaers ago, but prices are going way up..
