What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of pics

What's up guys? Long time no see. Sorry I've been a ghost last 2 weeks, was out of state and then moving. Got to leave in 5 minutes to move the last stuff out of the old apartment, and then I'm back 100%. Wanted to throw this topic up before I leave though.

So for the three of you that care (:)) here's what I was doing in my time off from the forum. I'll keep it short, since there's not much to report.

First up (because it's coolest) is my 1954 Gretsch Electromatic Twin amp. I got this from a dude who has owned it since the mid 60's, and he's loved it every day. But it hasn't worked for 20 years, so he's stored it. I suppose he just wanted to let it go to someone else. Below are the pictures from the 1955 Gretsch ad (notice the price on this puppy!):

And here are the pictures of the amp from the seller. See that big ass stain? It's a Pabst Blue Ribbon he spilled in 1968. Pretty cool, I think:

So here's some pics I took when I got it. When it came, it didn't work at all. Over the last month I replaced some tubes, and did some small electric work, and she works now! Very quiet, she needs a few new caps. But sound comes out, that's all I care about at the moment. :)

Not the prettiest wiring job, but it's handwired and all tube, so who cares!

And here she is, moderately cleaned up and with my other 2 babies (at the old apartment):

That last pic leads me to my next big change, I bought my first acoustic! Yay! The Gretsch Americana came, and it's a treat. Sounds better than you'd expect (obviously not great, but more than decent), and plays just fine. Plus, for $99, it's just too darn cool to pass up. That's really the only picture I have at the moment, but it'll work.

Last, we've got my latest work on my Green Buddy, and then to the news that basically made this year for me. Long story short, I simply replaced the bridge pickup ring (the old white one) with a Gretsch Silver Surround. Neck is coming when I can afford the Super'Tron ($200). Here's the before and after:

And here's my favorite picture, and the one that led to the best e-mail I've ever gotten:

closeupyc6.jpg

So I post these on the TV Jones forum in my massive thread (here) and I get this e-mail from Tom the next day:

"Hi Big Al III
We dig what you've done with your 1962 Liberty Custom MT-280.
May we have permission to possibly use some of these photos on
the TVJones.com website? It's an inspiration!
Thanks,
Tom"

Basically made my life. Even if he doesn't use them ever, just the fact that he was cool enough to ask if he could use them and that he wants to use them makes this entire project that much more special. Of course I told him (while shaking) that absolutely he can use them.

So that's my news. I'll leave with a few group shots of the guitars and amps here at my new apartment. The walls are bare, but won't be for long. And my poor Fenders are all down in LA, I don't bring them up with me. :(

'Twas a great few months! By the way, I lost my wire cutters. So that's why all my strings are the way they are.

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

What the hell ever happened with the truss rod on that green piecer?

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

Well, I replaced the nut so action is low enough now, and intonation is fine. And the truss rod isn't going anywhere. It's not broken, I just can't adjust it. But the neck isn't in danger of snapping or anything.

It still needs to be replaced, but I'm going to get the entire neck rebuilt when I get that done. New fretboard, frets, and rod. I've been getting quotes up to $1,000 though (which is WAY high) so until I A) find a good tech and B) get the money, I gotta live with it. No big deal though.

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

Good to hear it is still functional. I thought it was out of commission because of the deal. And $1k for a neck is insane.

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

Thank you! Yeah, $1k for a neck is insane. I know for a fact I could fix the truss rod, and if I didn't have binding to worry about I know I could put a new board on too. But that binding worries me. Best to get it done right.

But $1k? Come on. Someone out there is gonna hit the magic number of around $200-$400, and I'll probably bite. Just gotta find em.

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

Al, over on the My Les Paul forum is Roman Rist, a luthier out of LA. He's a really great guy, hit him up, he may be able to help with the Buddy's neck. He's on right now, maybe I can ask him about it for you?

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

Dude, that would be awesome of you! Thank you for the offer. I'm fairly sure I don't have the money, but if it's low enough maybe I can sell something to get the money.

Anyways, thank you! That would be really nice.

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

Good to see you back!! Good score on the amp and Tom actually calling to see if they can put your green buddy on their web???!!!??? Now that is WAY cool!!!!!

Good Job!! BTW thanks for putting me onto TVJones...great stuff!!

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

Thanks Dave! I'm quite pleased with the amp (that's an understatement actually). Since the volume caps are old and not working, the amp is about as loud (maybe a tiny bit louder) than normal conversation volumes, when turned to 10. So what I can do is plug in my distortion pedal (the Guv'nor as seen up there), and basically crank the pedal. That gets the amp at room shaking volumes, without hurting the tubes or speakers, and gives me a distorted tone that's impossible on the Falcon. Great mix!

Or, I can use the Falcon as a reverb/tremolo unit. It was designed as both an amp and a reverb/tremolo unit for other amps, since it was one of the very first amps with reverb and tremolo both built in. So I simply plug my guitar into input one, and the Gretsch Twin into jack 2, and all of the sound plus reverb/tremolo goes straight through the Gretsch amp! Pretty incredible sounding really. Or if I plug the Gretsch into "Monitor," then both amps work simultaneously for an AWESOME stereo effect!

Awesome stuff. :)

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

BigAl i'd give my right nut(its the only one left) for that sweet tweed Gretsch and Gibbo amp. Nice guitars too. Glad to see the Green Monster is back. I used to hate that guitar, but now I would like to have it. Looks like its become a real player. Better than it was when you got bummed out cause it broke.

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

lol Thanks Jerry! Used to hate the Green Machine huh? :( What changed your mind? And she'll be a real player as soon as I get some good frets on there. Until then, she sounds great (especially cranked) but playing can either go really well or be a real chore.

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

Here's a few pictures I just snapped with you especially in mind Jerry! Sorry they're so massive. I wanted to preserve the details:

Here's the Gretsch somewhat close. I absolutely love three things. I love the feel and look of the switches (I'm thinking of replacing my Green Buddy's switch with this if I can find another one). I really like the 'pilot light' a lot. And I love the cute little "Electromatic" badge on the right. The day I got it, I just sat and smiled at the pilot light and switches. Just cool:

gretschcloseql9.jpg

Here's the Falcon, nothing that hasn't been seen before. I don't even know why I'm posting it, just for the halibut I suppose. I really like the writing on the front that says "Falcon Amplifier" though. I think it looks classy. And I like the font too, of everything:

falconcloselc3.jpg

Last I suppose, here's the close up on my favorite part. I love every single detail here. Maybe I love the little details in this stuff too much, I dunno. But the "Gibson Electronics" text, the bit about Kalamazoo, the red shield logo, the On-Off switch, just everything. Like I said, I probably care too much. But these little details that have been on a handmade amp for 40-50 years, I get off on this stuff man!

Great pics and news. The TV Jones-thing is amazing! Must've been quite a kick!

Oh, and that Gretsch amp has tons of mojo. Way cool!

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

OMG!! That Gretsch amp is unreal dood. If you ever decide to sell it I will buy it!

Re: What I've been up to in the last 2 months (Gretsch/Green Buddy content). Lots of

Hey Big Al, great to see you've been keeping yourself *properly* busy ;)

I'm glad about the new amp (which must be on a new coolness level) but I'm especially happy to hear that you were able to get the Lean Mean Green Buddy Machine back into commission, even if it was a temporary fix. I never heard that you had found its' origins, last I remember you didn't know but that didn't stop you from loving it!
And the thing about the photos on the TV Jones site.
Man, I bet you must have been feeling like flying.

Really happy to know that when good things come they're not afraid to do so in numbers ;)

Oh, and glad to be hearing from the big yellow bird again ;)

CheerS man!

Thanks Tor! The TV Jones thing just blew me away. I think I was still shaking from excitement 15 minutes later.

Well I'll keep you in mind then! I'm not sure I'm gonna sell it, but if I need to I'll contact you first.

Ill buy your Les Paul!

Oh yeah? Hmm....

That rig is perfect in my mind.. mmm MMM..

:) Thank you very much. But it doesn't have my Tele or Strat in the pictures! Needs them somewhere. Actually, to be perfectly honest I need a good Marshall type combo (Matchless or something) for good powerful overdriven tones. And I need a few more things (pedal steel, resonator, better acoustic, 10 more Gretsches, 5 more Gretsch amps, etc.). But it's getting there.

that's beutiful man, great old school looking gear. :bigbok:

I like the old school gear bit, that's basically what I'm going after these days.

:) Thank you! About the Green guitar, I got some exciting news. Basically it's a copy of an early 60's Martin GT-75. But they changed a few things around and actually made it better. I guess that's where the "Custom Guitar" aspect comes in. Those old Martin guitars sell for a pretty price nowadays.

Matter of fact, I was talking about this on the Gretsch Pages, and a dude here in Santa Cruz told me about how More Music (a local music store) has one for sale! They're selling it in the "don't even ask" category, which for them means over $5k. Now here's the cool part.

I went to that same music store a year ago to get my case for the Green guy (that pink one up there). He offered me $1800 on the spot (keep in mind I paid $185). I flatly declined, but that offer has always stuck in my head. "Why!?" Well, now I know!

Here's the Martin. Check out the headstock shape and everything!

Anyways, thank you very much! It's awesome to be back, and you're right. When a door closes, a window opens. In this case, about 5 windows. :)

Call me when you get a White Falcon.;):)

But I can't then! You'll be dead, right? ;)
