WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

A Peavey VTM 120 half stack. Got it along with a Charvel Dinky when I traded a 1980 Pontiac Sunbird to a coworker for them when I was 16.

Before that I had been playing a cheap generic acoustic that was literally falling apart. Lol

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

Vox Valvetronix 15 watt. Still have it actually. I use it in my apartment when a 100 watt 4x12 is kinda stupid.

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

Me three! In fact I recently got mine back my friend who had borrowed it for over 10 years. I'm going to experiment with external speaker cabinets once I figure out how to safely extend the speaker wire output. It's too short to reach outside. I could perhaps just take the amp out of the stock Rage 158 cab, attach a 1/4" jack to the end of the terminals and place it very close to an external cab. I'm also wondering what an 8" Weber alnico would sound like in the Rage 158 enclosure.

A few years ago I knocked the Marshall MG off of a table and broke the input jack and clean channel volume knob. While it was being repaired I had the tech add an external speaker jack that disconnects the internal speaker when used. This way I can record 'crappy sounds' with the built in speaker, or a kind of cool SS metal / industrial sound when pushing a decent cabinet. I've thought about putting a better 10" speaker in the combo, but these days I just use an external box when I want better.

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

The first one I actually owned and didn't have to borrow was an old Crate G40, loved it at the time.

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

I had a fender frontman 15r . . . Not the greatest amp, but it was fine for practice. Cleans sounded nice on it, and it got reasonably loud for an 8 inch speaker.

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

A Hallicrafters shortwave radio found in the town dump, and modified with a 1/4" input and a 6" TV speaker (also from the dump) bolted inside, under the top vents. It would shock the hell out of me any time I touched a mic and my guitar strings simultaneously. It looked like this:

A busking we will go!

Ha! Would've been perfect for that! Actually wasn't a bad little guitar and amp. I remember I found out I could get a distorted sound with the volume turned all the way up...all 10 watts of beginner glory! XD

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

An Ampeg practice amp, maybe a 10" speaker, Volume, Bass, and Treble, bought new in 1978, brought it to a jam in the neighborhood, and got laughed at all the way home. Saved my pennies, and a few years later bought a Peavey Roadmaster 120W head, and 2 4X10 cabinets, full stack. No one laughed after I bought that.........Nice clean sound, but the overdrive sound was awful....

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

I had a Gorilla. Hahahaha!!! My first "tube" amp was a Peavey Rockmaster pre amp plugged into an old tuck and roll Kustom 4x10 combo. Supa dupa!!! Damn thing would shock the hell out of you if you had your hand on the strings of your guitar and tried to adjust the knobs on the Kustom. Lol!

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

My grandma bought me an Acoustic combo. It sounded awful but it sure was loud. It wasn't too easy on the eyes either. Looked like this:

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

This was my amp through high school... I had a metal zone pedal in front of it. Built the speakers myself. Used it through college as well, put my bed on top of the speakers and called it the penthouse... Hey hey hey

.

These days I use it for a pa... As well as a hanger for my wife's and kid's bow, and all my tapes are mounted on the side of it. Ha ha ha tapes!

Re: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST AMP?

My first amps were these little all tube jobs. Both had single small speakers, but when you cranked them up it was unbelieveable. I was sold on tube amps ever after. One we nicked named the "Boston Wailer" and the other "The Little Marshall". I have no idea where they are now. As for my first store-bought amp, my parents got me a Custom 2X12, solid state....way too clean. Hated it.
