Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

On that note, my wife complained about me playing unplugged a few weeks ago while our daughter was napping. I was like, "You're kidding, right?". LOL

FYI, for those that have 100 watt heads, play at home, AND record: http://www.two-notes.com/en/torpedo-captor

There's a 20dB attenuator in there. :)

20db is weak sauce.

There's studio heasphones on the market with ~20db output difference between models (AkG k92 vs k240, for example, and I'm sitting here looking at both on my desk, just so no one tries calling me on a "bluff")

20db less than loud-loud.... is still nowhere near quiet.

Hi guys. I need a lightweight amp that I can take onto a plane as carry-on luggage.

Which 100w stack is best for me?

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

100 watt heads at low volumes have sounded good since at least the 80’s when the JCM800 2210 models were released. My 1997 made DSL100 head sounds killer at home, at band practice and on stage.

My band plays small club gigs all the time and we’ve never had a problem.

My 100W Marshalls have always sounded great at low volumes, not to mention at earth shattering volumes in huge spaces. They have also been the most versatile, most fully-featured models in the line, which is the real reason why I bought them. If amp companies put the most channels and the most knobs and switches in their 5-20 watt amps, that’s what I would buy.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

I can run my 50W plexi Marshall dimed at home, have it at any volume level (while being dimed) and it sounds the same (sounds awesome) whether whisper quiet or rattling the walls.

But only because I know the ancient secret of taming the tube amp beast...

I would say the same for my DSL100 it sounds great at bedroom volumes and even better in a live environment. The same for my 100 watt Fender Quad. I had that amp in my teens if I had it pegged all the time my parents would have killed me. My JC120 is actually harder to dial into bedroom volumes than the Marshall or Fender.

100 1 Watt heads and speaker cabinets would be too much to move around....

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

Why not just wear a headband with two miniature robot arms that stuff torn-off pieces of bar napkins in your ears?

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

I'm not into 70's arena rock, so I have no use for excessive poweramp distortion.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

A 7 watt amp with an inefficient speaker isn't loud enough to play with another guitarist and a heavy hitting drummer (learned that first hand). Besides having no headroom at all, you do get drowned out. I've never found a need for more than 40 watts into some efficient speakers though.

It always struck me as weird that metal guys were into really big amps . . . like the reasoning that you need clean headroom and therefore a big amp makes sense, but metal guys aren't usually playing clean.

For the downtuned, chest thumping, tight palm-muted riffs, too much poweramp distortion is not your friend.
