I've seen plenty of people using 100 watt heads at home for metal but you can barely get it cooking,
So what is the point of 100 watt head?

I play a 5 watt head and the volume is still loud enough to gig with, but I do look at big Randalls and marshalls and think "damn, I want one of those.." and then say "they're expensive and what's the point?"

Up until recently I was a loyal 100w user because they simply didn't make what I wanted in anything less.
In the past, with the exception of certain classics (and the people who copy them) just about anything below 100w was generally a stripped down version of the 100 watter and they usually didn't sound as good as the original. They put all their design effort in the 100w, then toss out a 50w version with two less tubes as an afterthought.
I think the Tiny Terror came out in 2008, which started the lunchbox revolution... but for the most part those were considered toys. It's really only been the last few years where amp manufacturers have started treating the sub-50w market as a serious market.

Even at low volume where nothing is cooking at all (other than the preamp gain) and within the same exact amp, IMO the leads tones are slightly better at 50w vs 100w.
(pull a pair of tubes vs running all four, or using half-power if equipped)

Ever been on a stage next to a maple DW kit, in a venue that has over 1200 audience members? 100W is about right.

Some Dude said it well.. IMO there didnt used to be smaller amps that had the tone of a good cooking tube amp. Yes, 100 w can be overkill for home use. But when I get to crank up my Splawn, its glorious!!
It does have a 1/2power switch on it, but it doesnt have the same low end thump.

Well, a fast car you won't enjoy any more than a family car if all you ever do is puddle down to the shops.......well actually you will like it less because its so damn uncomfortable with the stiff suspension over the typical suburban crappy roads.
Large amps typically have a threshhold for enjoyment......especially if you are the sort of person who finds the fizzy low volume tone awful
A good meal or beer or sunset etc doesn't have a threshhold for enjoyment.

Headroom. I bought my 100 watt amp 30 years ago because I wanted big chunk and a hard, tight crunch with a ton of headroom. No mush.
But I could probably get along fine with a 50 watter.

I played with a very hard hitting drummer and his kit was a Yamaha Maple Custom. I have to agree with that statement. Besides 100 watt amps are not like 10 times louder than a cranked up small amp anyway. A 50 watt amp is only about twice as loud as a 5 watt amp, and 100 watts is only 3db louder than 50 watts, although 3db is noticeable.

Well said.....I do enjoy my 120 watt Triple XXX head and my 50 watt EVH 3 head,even at lower volumes,,the low end is awesome with the palm muting!

I'm on my second 100W tube Marshall head. Whenever I've been looking for a Marshall sound, I just keep running into great deals on full-featured, top-of-the-line modern amps. Who am I to turn down something like that?
