What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

Smaller amps sound great in small rooms, and if the PA is adequate you can gig pretty much anything, but when the room isn’t small and the PA isn’t adequate you quickly learn how fast a small amp runs out of headroom.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

tube amps usually sound better when they are turned up a bit, which usually means loud. neighbors dont like loud much

The deer in my backyard haven't complained yet.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

i use a 20w deluxe reverb for 90% of my shows. for small clubs i can at least get it up enough where it sounds good, though its still pretty clean. i had a eminence maverick in there for a while and it was great being able to adjust the volume but the tone wasnt quite as good as i wanted so im back to a g12h-30 55hz. at bigger clubs, i can crank it up and it sounds great while also not being so loud on stage that its obtrusive. if im outdoors with a questionable pa or need a ton of clean headroom, bigger amps get brought out. if you have a good/trusted sound guy, it makes things a lot easier. even if the club has a guy, we usually bring ours to make sure we get what we need

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

I’m actually having my 2204 modded as we speak.
It’s getting a Metro zero loss loop, PPIMV, added gain mod and I’m thinking I may have a clean channel added as well.

My 2204 I sold in 2001 was my favorite amp I've ever owned -it was modded and magical.

I bought it from a musician friend while on tour in Richmond Virginia who was in that 90s Richmond scene that had tone in spades.

For what it is worth, I can use my BE100 at bedroom levels and still get a driven sound. My point is that a good MV can go a long way.

+1. You gotta pick the right tool for the job.

Absolutely...same with my Splawn.

Absolutely, the same as my DSL100. I do have to crank it to get to the sweet spot but when I am practicing at home I am doing just that, practicing. I do not have to hit the sweet spot to practice scales and work on songs. When I get to practice or play live that is when I let it rip.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

Last year (2017 really), I sold me beloved JCM 900 MkIII 2100 head. I used it maybe half a dozen times in the last 10 years with the band. At the time I sold it, I wasn't in a band anymore and raising cash for other responsibilities. It was time. My back hated lugging it and the 2x12 and I had been using my Vox AD50VT (which I sold several years ago) and now my Vox AV30. The weight of the AV30 is half the weight of the Marshall head and Vox AD50VT. And just because the AV30 has 10" speaker doesn't mean it can't keep up. When I first got it, I had to turn it down a lot from where I had the AD50VT set. And that was with the previous band where we had electronic drums, keys, two guitars and bass. In my current band, we have a quite loud drummer (acoustic set), two guitars and bass. I'm not even close to half on the volume with the power level maxed and there's plenty room to spare. Crazy for a little amp like this. All I need is good stage volume. It's mic'd up for stage use otherwise. While having that big 100 watt amp was nice, and I loved it, it simply became impractical for me.

Its a rare person that a 100watt head is really practical for.

Even now ive kept my big heads just because I smile so much when i plug into them. Do i hate hauling them around? Yep! Do i really put them through their paces? Nope. But man do they make me smile.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

I don't get everyone saying a 100w head is too much to lug around. I have a mid-sized sedan and I get my whole rig in the car. With my guitar on my back in the gig bag I load in in one trip.

Right?
I have a similar setup as you except I gig with 3 guitars and pedalboard and a utility bag. I can load-in with a MAX of 3 trips. That’s what? Less than 5 minutes...

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

There was a time when that 100 watt head and a 2x12 were practical. And it's not that they were difficult to lug around, my back made them difficult to lug around. Hell, I pulled my back out lifting my old Vox AD50VT combo to put in the car after a gig. And yes, I have a dolly that I use. I have a hatchback so fitting my whole rig in the car has never been a problem. I'm doing better these days but having lighter load-in and load-out is really nice.

I hate them ever since i moved to a 3rd floor apartment with a parking space 100 yards away. And to be honest its not the heads that bother me as much as the cabs. But then again I only have 4x12's

Yep, I could see that being a problem. I almost never take the 4x12 out of the house. Making my life easier the person that owned my house before me was in a wheelchair. I have a ramp on the house, I can roll the amp right to the car. If I was in your situation my only amp would be a Fender Deluxe.

Oh damn a real ADA wheelchair ramp? that means not even a step up, a bumpy threshold, or a damn stoop!!

So it's settled then -when does "Securb's big ass Marshall Stack and SVT storage facility" open?

Trust me there are plenty of boat anchor amps in my basement. As far as stack storage goes you will have to talk to Jolly. If someone has a picture of Jolly's kitchen please post it.

It could be a bit out of date. Maybe John will chime in with a current shot.
