What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Single coil pickups (e.g. Fender or P90's) through a Princeton Boogie. Yummy!

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

What's my holy grail of high gain? I guess, it's me. Regardless of amp I tend to tweak them until I'm happy with them. At the end of the day the sound is almost identical for some reason :)

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Zinky Superfly or MOFO.
Nothing else quite responds like one of Bruce's amps to touch.

My second choice would be a Splawn Quick Rod.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Oh, i read the thread.. nice amps. I heard Metallica had to use pedals to get high gain out of thier marks, which I don't know how 'high gain' they are, I havent been able to dial in any crushing stuff on a MKIIC+ I been playing .Some guys consideration of ol skool guitars and amps, or total ignorance and the "tone is in the fingers" high gain thing, like "man, whatever i have is high gain" BS in is absurd IMO. A cranked AC30 might be a great distortion tone , but it is NOT high gain especially witha stock Tele, those guitars cannot do high gain.
I guess there will never be a definition of what is modern Metal gain /vs. ol skool metal gain , and of course that will always lead to trouble on these threads

Get at me.

Kinda cheating, but it's cured my amp GAS for just over a year now and doesn't look like it'll be letting up anytime soon.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Are we talking high gain or just a distortion tone??

My fav amps for good old school crunch tones are plex face Marshalls or brown face Fenders. A good JTM-45 or a brown Deluxe or Concert is a great sounding amp for just plug in, turn up and get some nice natural grind however none of those amps are high gain IMO.

If I were going to buy a high gain amp right now I'd get a VHT/Fryette Pitbull UL...that is an amazing piece of machinery and is mind blowing but it's way more amp than most of us have a place to really use!

Christian . . . i remember (probably a few years ago, by now) that you once said you liked the Hi-Gain tones of the VHT (back then) Pitbull UL, and that you also once nearly pulled the trigger on the amp.

I was very surprised to hear that you liked any hi-gain amps (...well, THAT hi-gain, anyways), and even more so that you even considered buying one !!!

What do you like about the VHT Pitbull UL dirt tones ?
I heard/read that the UL is a very dry sounding amp - any thruth in that ?

Cheers

Metallica used pedals to boost Marshall's in the early days.

If you can't get a crushing tone out of a Mark IIC+ it's not the amps fault.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I use an Ibanez tone blaster cab and head for gain. It really makes my neighbors mad

Sent from a cucumber

My cousin (he plays in two metal bands, and is better at the genre) gets uber metal tones with my true-single-coil Tele (see sig) through his Line6 Spider Valve and with my 5150 (boosted with a 10Band EQ & BD-2 of all things)

. . . just sayin' :D

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Why not just a MK I? I assume for the rare/wow factor?

I'd be thrilled to have one of those too! But what I really meant is that if I wanted a high gain amp, I'd like to take my silverface Princeton (a '69 or '70, maybe, no-reverb model) and do the Boogie treatment to it, the way it was done in the early days of the company. I like the look of the modded Fender, as opposed to the factory Boogie look. Also, is the Mk. I really the same amp as a Princeton Boogie? I didn't think they were exactly the same.

Hope this isn't cheesy....but Randall Warhead for me.

Seeing as you like the Randall Warhead, and have the Tardis as a profile pic, I assume you like Metal and Doctor Who. Have you ever given the back of the album Caught Somewhere in Time and the single art for Wasted Years by Iron Maiden a good look?
