What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Uuuuggghhh, so hard to choose!!!!! My current amp is the Mesa Mark V and I don't think I'l ever need another amp again but I have said that before. 6505/5150, TSL100, Dual/Trip Recto are also favs of mine.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I never would have thought to own one. I got mine on clearance because Guitar Center isnt dealing Boogie anymore and they had to get rid of them. I got the combo a couple of hundred off and I love it. I hope you get one someday, they're awesome.

For me, the Soldano X88R (with Telefunkens) into a Fryette/VHT 292 or 252 (set up for 5881's, etc.) power amp has been my mainstay since 1998 -- usually into EVMs. Second choice is my Bruno Super 100 with 6L6's into G65's ... fwiw, imho, ymmv, etc. haha

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I was pretty happy with an ENGL Powerball, until I heard a Bogner Uberschall Twin Jet. Now THAT's a high-gain amp.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I got a EVH 5150 III 100 watter not too long ago.
It smokes.
I'm getting a Randall Thrasher soon....according to popular consensus it should be the end of all amps. I'll see if it lives up the the hype.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

This is the Holy Grail, the two Monster of Rock, first choice German second American, the first eclipses the second but I love booth.

There is no other amp like a Diezel VH4 for Metal, period.Holly Grail of High Gain.jpg

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

There has been a lot of great high gain amps throughout the years, starting in the 80s, but the one for me is the Fryette Sig:X. It's like those screwdrivers with the 12 different drivers.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I am going to offer my contribution derived from actual ownership as opposed just GASing and speculation:

Cornford Roadhouse - All the gain you need but controllable and eloquent - Add a an OCD and you have all the noise you ever need but recordably so!

For some reason ^ this ^ amp reminds me of the (short lived ?) H&K WARP amp.

(probably due to the name)
I see they are not on the H&K site any more - probably been replaced by the uber-corny named Coreblade model ?

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I'm pretty happy with my current set-up (either a slightly boosted Orange Rocker 30 with dimed gain or my Recto-verb) but there's just something about a cranked Thunderverb200 that just screams to me (everytime I die's live tone is insane with these).
I know there are plenty of amazing high-gain machines out there but for me it always comes down to that recto-gain I grew-up on with the 3rd wave ('90s) of punk rock and that period's hard-core/metal...

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

The Mesa/ Boogie Road King I is all anyone needs for High Gain.

It is the most brutal MUSICAL amp I have ever played through.

I love my Road King.

That Diezel will cause your balls to explode at bedroom volume. It might not be as loud as the Herbert, but it's the loudest 100w amp I have ever heard. Sweet rig man.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I don't play very high gain stuff

But IMO the best distorted amp sound is a 100w plexi at full volume

No, I haven't gotten to play one at that volume myself - but I can dream. Every recording I've heard of it makes me want to grab my willie and run around in circles all excited like.
