What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

The threat title says "high gain." I know people are going to rag on me for this, but a stock 800 doesn't really fit that description.

Well people have mentioned amps here that are less qualified already such as the Boogie Princeton and the old school Plexis. But yeah, a modded JCM 800 sort of blazed the trail for high gain amps didn't it?

SADLY, the Krank Amplification Co. as we know it . . . is no more :(

You do know that Krank didn't make the Warhead, Randall did. And Randall is very much still around lol. But Krank is outta business?? I didn't know that!! :17:

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I've gone through some nice amps (Soldano, Rivera, Two rock, ...) but have found my groove with one of these

Yeah dude, just in the last year or so. Go on their website it explains everything.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I like to get a solid clean tone from my amp, so I usually don't use any (or much) amp distortion. I like to get all my distortion from pedals, and my go-to for high gain is the Boss MD-2.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I really want to try:

EVH 5150 III
Diezel VH4
Peavey 5150 (even I'm surprised I haven't tried one)
Mesa Road King
Soldano Hot Rod
Randall Satan or Thrasher
Rhodes Colossus or Gemini
Mesa Mark 5
Splawn Nitro
Engl Savage or Engl Ironball
Bogner Helios

And the list goes on.

Lots to try, it sucks having no good music stores around.

Ampeg V4 + Model T + Boss HM-2 set to chainsaw + EMG 81 = lol sun
dis guy. he get it.

On the subject of Krank amps, I went to the site. Apparently Mr. Krank and crew are working on a new amp line named Revolution. It's...got Guy Fawkes masks on the 1sheet, so if it's an Anonymous-themed amp, I'mma gonna find the nearest corner and cry in it.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I'm pretty happy with my current set-up (either a slightly boosted Orange Rocker 30 with dimed gain or my Recto-verb) but there's just something about a cranked Thunderverb200 that just screams to me (everytime I die's live tone is insane with these).
I know there are plenty of amazing high-gain machines out there but for me it always comes down to that recto-gain I grew-up on with the 3rd wave ('90s) of punk rock and that period's hard-core/metal...

MMMmmm . . . better look into them !

EDIT :

In this rig rundown they both still use 800's, and it is just briefly mentioned that one of them prefer to use the TV200 in Europe.

True . . . beat me to it.

YUP, some modded 800's do get that hi-gain thing going, pretty bloody well.

FJA comes first to mind :

I don't mean to be rude but you think that little rig rundown you searched for tells you the whole story about a band you didn't know about before posting? I've been following them for years, both live and what they do in the studio. Yes, they both love their 800s ... However, they've used a lot of different amps live and I've heard them play TV's a lot live and yes, they sound AMAZING...IMHO, way better than wehen using 800s, which was my point all along: that heir tone is greatwith the Oranges (both of them [since you seem to feel the need to underline this yourself in your post], Andy and Jordan...)and it's a great high-gain tone to me.

That made me think about it, I haven't listened to Hot Damn! in a while.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Don't knock it til ya try it.

This. I'm a Kemper guy but I would happily own and play an AxeII if I were gigging more (the software + footcontroller + 2 rack space and possibility of using 1 AxeFX for 2 guitarists makes it better for touring than the KPA) or hadn't purchased the KPA first. I still love tube amps and halfstacks and everything but at this point the modeler (as long as you're talking AxeII or KPA) v real amp argument is more down to convenience than tone. Some people work better with a full amp/cab setup; I'd be MORE than happy to go Axe/KPA -> IEM or powered monitor.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

My Mesa MkIII....with all eight 12s. :D

A cranked JCM800 or my JVM doing its impression of the same on OD1 is up there too for when I start having Slaytanic visions....

A Diezel Herbert is no slouch for more modern voicing. Haven't played their other models yet...

Although I come back to the Mark every time.
