What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Mullard 12AX7's x at least 4 before phase inverter w/no -feedback loop. What's a gate?

A Diezel Herbert is no slouch for more modern voicing. Haven't played their other models yet...
A few years ago, I was checking out an Uberschall. Then the sales guy showed me the Diezel Einstein he had in stock. That thing was other-worldly.

I'm not a huge fan of the Herbert, though. Its basic voicing is too scooped for my taste.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Fender Deluxe, cranked.

If you don't like this, you'd be wrong.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

You got me Jerry, it is pretty lame.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

:bigeyes2: Wow! NOT Lame! The V4 is big. Not exatly modern High gain, nor is the Sunn ModelT, although thats a NMV amp, and you could use a high gain Preamp to make that sound like a beast. Probably like a Butcher could, especially for doom/Stoner I guess. Okay, I was so wrong about everything. I see now.
BTW, I didnt see a Model T in that set up f that band. As far a a cranked Deluxe Tweed being high gain;..... c'mon man! Neil Youngs tone is cool, and I dig it a lot, but it isnt High gain, lets establish some parameters?
BTW, I found out i have a 60 Watt Peavey VTX Combo..much the same as a Butcher...much less Power...same basic amp I think.

Christian . . . i remember (probably a few years ago, by now) that you once said you liked the Hi-Gain tones of the VHT (back then) Pitbull UL, and that you also once nearly pulled the trigger on the amp.

I was very surprised to hear that you liked any hi-gain amps (...well, THAT hi-gain, anyways), and even more so that you even considered buying one !!!

What do you like about the VHT Pitbull UL dirt tones ?
I heard/read that the UL is a very dry sounding amp - any thruth in that ?

Cheers

I don't drift to high gain amps but when I did I loved the VHT Pitbul UL and it was that very articulate, punchy dry sound...it's not for everybody but I dig it!

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I'd be thrilled to have one of those too! But what I really meant is that if I wanted a high gain amp, I'd like to take my silverface Princeton (a '69 or '70, maybe, no-reverb model) and do the Boogie treatment to it, the way it was done in the early days of the company. I like the look of the modded Fender, as opposed to the factory Boogie look. Also, is the Mk. I really the same amp as a Princeton Boogie? I didn't think they were exactly the same.

I don't know if they are exactly the same...I've never played through a Princeton Boogie but I did see one at a gutar show once...same guy had a Boogie treated Vibrolux too! I am pretty sure that they are VERY similar if not the same.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Would LOVE to have a MK I

All this MK I talk makes me wonder...is that rally a high gain amp today??

I used to have one, odd ball piece with a factory EVM15L (not the usual 12!).

It was a cool amp but to b e honest it didn't have as nice a clean tone as a good Fender amp, the drive sound was cool but not amazing and going from one sound to the other was not very easy...very un-user friendly amp overall.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I really want to try:

EVH 5150 III
Diezel VH4
Peavey 5150 (even I'm surprised I haven't tried one)
Mesa Road King
Soldano Hot Rod
Randall Satan or Thrasher
Rhodes Colossus or Gemini
Mesa Mark 5
Splawn Nitro
Engl Savage or Engl Ironball
Bogner Helios

And the list goes on.

Lots to try, it sucks having no good music stores around.

You could always try looking for decent studios and become buddies with the people that run them. Usually they will have a classic amp or two laying around for recording. It's what I did, and I always suggest starting with classic amps. You'd be pleasantly surprised what you could get out of an AC30.

And the EVH 5150 III and the Peavey 5150/6505 aren't going to be much different (to my knowledge, I'm just going by name alone). So that shortens the list! :D

On one of my recent threads VK said that the III and the standard 5150 are completely different beasts.

And yes, and AC30 is definitely one I think I would enjoy, but I don't have a place to crank one, so even if I had the dough, I probably wouldn't buy one.

I never really thought to look for studios in the area, thanks for bringing that up.

To my ears, i do not see it as a hi-gain amp at all.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I think the Mark I is still high gain, just more of a fat 70s sound than a modern, punchy, crunch/chug sound.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

I have played or owned a lot of really cool high gain monsters. For me there are two that are right at top and aren't going anywhere: My Hughes & Kettner Triamp mk2 and my VHT/Fryette Pittbull UL. The Kettner is insanely versatile....so many good sounds in that amp from clean to overdriven to full out mayhem and it does them all admirably. It is also a very transparent high gain sound in that it really highlights different guitars tone signatures well! The ultralead's high gain tone is very dry, clean, tight and quick! Its response really allows small nuances in playing to shine through and with that on board graphic eq, you can tailor your tone to any situation.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

How can we have a high-gain amp thread and not include this:

OK

:)

Just out of curiosity's sake then.

Do you feel the Marshall Vintage Modern, gain maxed, on die 'Hi Dynamic' setting is a High Gain sound ?

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

Soldano, I also like the Bogner anniversary Shiva, and the EVH iii 50 watt head.

Re: What's your Holy Grail of High Gain?

This is pretty awesome for sick, earthquake worthy, absolutely over-the-top high gain.. :eyecrazy:

He needs to run it through at least three more 4x12's though :p

It's a wonder he did'nt blow those speakers to shreds..lol.
