Where did all the SG owners go ?

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

This is my sort of an SG, Epi Iommi G-400. I moved the normal top jack, to the body's edge, and a wired a 4P3T toggle switch, mounted into the jack location, to allow standard/split/parallel switching.

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

I do all my own wiring, self taught, no background in electronics and no handyman skills. Two books helped a lot: Dan Erlewine's "How to make your guitar play & sound great", and Donald Brosnac's "Guitar electronics for musicians". Lots of info on electronics & set up (StewMac carries both books).

Plus this forum is fill of ideas & advice; a great resource. Wiring is easy once you get past your initial jitters. Just keep in mind that every electrical part has a hot and a ground wire. Use a good diagram, like the ones on this website, and the average 12 year-old kid can do all kinds of neat things.

Thanx man.
I'll look into those books !

Question for you :

What do you think of wire'ing up-grade kits, like the one sold by RS Guitarworks ?

Worth it, or Snakeoil ?
I want to start a thread about it, but thought i'd ask you and everyone else in this thread first !

ALL-WHITE guitars . . .

. . . are you in a Praise & Worship band ? :scratchch

No, not at all... quite the opposite really...

It just happened to work out that way. I've got other SG's, Explorers, and LP's in different colors. Coincidentally, I just happen to acquire these 3 in white. I've even toyed with the idea of getting a V in white to complete the set. I love Gibson guitars, but when you think about it, they have some very boring color options. White just happened to appeal to me more than the other colors offered.

That's kinda been my beef with Gibson. Instead of hollowing out a guitar, or giving it a f'ed up faded look, or adding automatic tuning systems we don't need, HOW ABOUT ADDING SOME COOL COLORS WITHOUT A 300% mark-up? HUH?

...but thats a whole nuther thread.

The pickups are Gibson Tony Iommi Signature models, in the black finish. I got the guitar from a fellow Duncan member.

The tone is tight/articulate. Think alongs the the lines of Black Sabbath song Neon Knights. The magic starts @1:09:

The Iommi cuts through the with a very fine-toothed (think saw blade) tone structure, yet it also does well at the older Sabbath stuff because of the SG style body shape. You can dial in lots of gain on Iommis, and they stay clear. They are really a medium output pickup no matter what Gibson claims. They are supossed to have both ceramic and Alnico magnets, along with two blades for poles...but the pickups are encased in epoxy, so who knows? Some say Iommis sound thin, and I can see their point. I sometimes think they are going to sound thin before I pick up the guitar, but plugging the guitar in makes me know they are just so fine!

I play through a Mesa .50 Caliber +.

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

I should get an SG.

Every player should have an SG.

Why do so many guys get Strats as an automatic knee-jerk reaction, when 9 times out of 10, they'll sound better, and less tinny, with an SG? I think it's a subliminal thing, you see the Strat image everywhere and people think "That's what a guitar looks like, I must have one." Why not think for yourself, and get one that sounds better. You've got a sleek, comfortable body, 100% neck access, a volume & tone for each PU, tune-o-matic bridge, and warm, powerful humbuckers. It's a much classier-looking instrument. What's not to like? Strats were designed to be cheap to manufacture, and tone was a low priority. SG's were Gibson's answer to the Strat, and are a much more refined double cutaway.

That'll get the Strat boys going!

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

I agree with where you're goin blueman...the SG is a lot more 'full' and is built 'oldworld style' with the set neck and angled headstock and all that. plus the body woods are more to my liking. My SG can't do the chimey cleans that my Strat can do tho.

not necessarily a whole other thread...the SG-X had some of the coolest colors Gibson's ever tried.

and of course my green one that gets posted too much.

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

Here's my white SG standard on the left - all stock. Came right out of the box as a great sounding, great playing guitar. It just bleeds mojo...

I gotta tell you, man, this black on white collection sends me to the floor.

Did you ever think about changing the SG to white-black-white 3-layer pickguard, black pickups and black hardware?

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

Two words: Anderson H3 . . best SG bridge pickup. In the neck I have a Armstrong humbucker sized P-90, super crunchy and fat yet articulate

DUDE . . .

. . . i know your pockets are empty, but can you get $400.00 any time soon ?

Check this out !

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-SG-Junior-Electric-Guitar?sku=517286

Do you know of this allready ?

James

Ahh that is sweet dude! About a year ago when I was shopping for SG's those things only came in red and were $600. A black one for $400 would be the perfect partner for my green SG-X, but I don't have any spare bills right now. This shows a real step in the right direction for Gibson tho...first the $350 Melody Maker last year and now a $400, made-in-America Gibson SG? I think Fender's gonna start sweating about this, since they're selling some Mexican axes for more than that...

Anyway good lookin out, but I think $90 for a new P-Rail is a little more realistic than $400 for a whole 'nother SG...of course, if i could, i'd own 'em all..

i have to say that I am one of the least follower people out there, and i own a strat, it's got a p90 in the neck position and it is easily one of the best guitars i've heard

Every time I read one of your posts, I feel like I'm reading an advertisement for Gibson. It's like Gibson can do no wrong, and Fender can do no right. The problem with these posts is, while you do bring up many good points about Gibson guitars, your derision of Fender makes your posts lose credibility, at least in my mind.

Are you aware that there are legions of guitarists, amateurs and professionals alike, who swear by Fender products and don't use anything Gibson? This is not to take anything away from Gibson at all. I own six electrics, among which are two Fenders and two Gibsons. I'm not biased one way or the other -- I play my SG as much as I play my Strat, which is a lot.

Why not sing the praises of Gibson without giving into that nagging urge to dig into Fender?
