Where did all the SG owners go ?

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

The problem with these posts is, while you do bring up many good points about Gibson guitars, your derision of Fender makes your posts lose credibility, at least in my mind.

It's not just you. It's a crappy technique used by salesmen who don't know any better. Talking smack about the competition makes it sound like your product wouldn't look very good without the other next to it.

As far as the "you should play an SG instead of a Strat" thing, must we really run the list of names again? Ok, fine, here goes.....

Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, SRV, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Rory Gallagher, Buddy Guy, Mark Knopfler, Robin Trower, and a whole bunch of other guys think Strats are ok. I dig the crap out of SGs, too, and will probably get an Epi Faded as my next guitar (I LOVE that huge neck), but they play, sound, and feel nothing like a Strat.

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

i have to say that I am one of the least follower people out there, and i own a strat, it's got a p90 in the neck position and it is easily one of the best guitars i've heard

I've only been playing since 2000, but i have two serious muso's in my family, so i've been around guitars since i was 8yo.
Holding many guitars since then, and trying to stum a chord, and what not, one thing that i came to notice early on, as soon as i knew my strat from 335 from Flying V from Tele, is that i never could gell with a strat ! EVER :boggled:

There is NOTHING about the guitar that i like !
For ME it is all wrong, and yes YMMV, that goes without saying but that guitar is not for me !

Don't get me wrong, IF i had the money, i would DEFF have a Jaguar & Tele in my collection (ermmm, make that two of each), over night - FACT !
But the strat . . . and that Gibson V, is just not made for this guy !

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

I really miss my Old SG, I owned a 70's cherry red SG, with the low impedance popsicle stick pickups. Gibson was written on the pickups and the bridge cover. Jammed through a treble booster and a Peavey 4x12. I had to sell it , it broke my heart to do so. he guy siad I could buy it back at the price I got for it. But he decided to chrage 100'2 more for it. I had to walk away and hate myself for it every day.
But anyways, I know this is not a real SG but I have one of these Cherry red. http://www.gregbennettguitars.com/tr2.html
I want to install new Pu's or at least try to replace mags with a-5's for better output. Right now the duncan designed just aint working for me, It is just so low sounding compared to my other guitars. But it is so playable. Had it set up when bought it and play it all the time.

The difference is that those guys know what they're doing & get great tones from their Strats. Don't forget Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Healey, & Coco Montoya. All masters of their instruments. But then you have guys like Robert Cray, who has nice songs & a great voice, but his tones are so tinny which only highlights his clumsy fingerwork. You'd think someone would tell him.

The average Strat player I see in local bars doesn't know how to get around that thin, tinny sound (the Robert Cray syndrome) and adds to it when he EQ's his amp with lots of treble and no low end. That's what's turned some of us off. It's the halfwits more than the guitar. And when some local guy knows how to get some nice sounds from his Strat, I enjoy listening to him.

Maybe Strats should come with an advisory: "Notice. This guitar has bright wood & bright single coil PU's. For the protection of the others within hearing range, please do not set your amp's treble & prescence on 10. There is a limit as to how much high frequencies the human ear can endure, not to mention our canine friends."

So what do you think of the ICE MAN's tone ???

I saw many photographs/album sleeves of Albert Collins playing a TELE w. a capo on the 10th fret :wrf: :omg:

No wonder he has a nick name like that !

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

I'm too lazy to post pics, but you can see mine in my avatar. A Gothic SG and an SG-X. I've tried '59's, Demons, Customs and Distortions in them. The '59/Custom combo is cool in my Gothic and a Demon resides in my X as of now. The Distortion was cool in my X too.

Ask and ye shall receive...I'm still loving this guitar, especially after smoothing out a couple of nut slots. Be prepared to do this yourself. I haven't run across too many Gibsons that didn't need work on the nut right out of the box. Now, it totally kicks ass. I've been jamming out on Cult songs on this thing through my Framus Dragon and LOVING it!!!

I just picked this baby up around 2 weeks ago:

The necks a little too big for what I prefer so I was thinking of having it reshaped but that requires destroying the beautifully aged white and messing up any resale value it may have in the future.

Okay...

Why not evaluate the resell value RIGHT NOW and sending me a p.m. :)

What year might that be?

Re: Where did all the SG owners go ?

I love my SG and want several more. I just haven't tried many pickups in it cuz it sounds really good with the stock one. I'm trying P-Rails soon cuz i've always wanted P90's but don't wanna sacrifice gnarly humbucker tone

HEY, 'EMPTY' . . .

. . . something for you !

Might wanna bid, as it is a best looking single PU SG i have seen to date !!!
