Who rocks hard with a semi-hollow? You? Famous Rock Stars?

Re: Who rocks hard with a semi-hollow? You? Famous Rock Stars?

ES175's and Byrdlands and whatever the P90 version that George Throroughgood uses are hollowbody archtops....as are the PRS F-hole guitars......NOT a good idea if you are using a high gain amp and even with vintage stuff, they feedback like a mother. Those charging elephant howls that Ted gets are just him removing his hands from the guitar and then trying to control the feedback:laugh2: By the way, Ted did sign an endrosement deal with PRS back in the Damn Yankees days (the zebra striped one he sold in his catalog) but IMHO, it never sounded as good as the Byrdland.....It was very noticable when he would switch back to the old guitars for the classic songs. Same as when Alex Lifeson would put away his PRS or super strat and break out the Les Paul Custom or ES for 2112, etc Night and day. The BB KIng Lucille is probably the best at controlling feedback because he had it designed for that. BB is ALL about stage volume whether he is using his old Gibson Lab Series amps or a Twin. I saw him from the 10th row of a 2200 seat concert hall and i didn't even hear his signal from the PA.....he just had that big ole Lab cranked!!!!!! And no feedback:fingersx:

OK... I think we've supplied enough reassurance to get you through the first step of your semi-hollow-insecurity recovery.

On to steps 2 and 3. Sell all your other guitars, then strip your semi and paint it PINK!

How could we forget this guy? I still think he used this on a few tracks from the 1st album. If `It's not my Cross to Bear' isn't pure 335 tone? I'm tone deaf.

I'm not sure if this guy "rocks hard"... but John Frusciante sometimes plays a semi-hollow!

Les Paul

I don't know how much he recorded with it, but Mark Kendall used what appears to be an ES335 on the "Once Bitten Twice Shy" video.

I don't think anyone will ever earn more cool points than Eric Johnson did on G3 when he showed up onstage to play alongside two of the top shredders in the business with a semi-hollow in his hands. Yeah, go ahead and use your double-locking trems and Ibanezes. I'll still show you up and have better tone in the process. :D

the libertines love their ES-175s, they were great live too!

and les paul? he designed a jazz guitar man, jimmy page had it all wrong :laugh2:

I haven't read the entire thread so these may have been mentioned...

Chuck Berry for one. Dave Grohl and Tim Arrmstrong come to mind.

That's a great list!

I'm a little suprised to see that Trey Anastsio didn't make the list. Maybe he doesn't "rwak" hard enough!

He's still got a kick-ass rig though; http://treyanastasio.com/treysrig/

That guitar of yours barely constitutes as a semi hollow..

It is however.. very kickass. How does it sound?

No worries, friend. I'm 30 years old, and a little bit past that kind of stuff. I still worry if chicks will think I look cool when I play guitar, but I listened to Number of the Beast backwards yesterday and I'm still here!

My wife has assured me that she likes my current guitar a lot better than any previous ones. In fact, she said something like "now stop wasting time on your dumb forums and start playing on stage! I want my rock star boyfriend back!"

She's pretty cool, huh?

Not so! Why do you say that? It's amplified tone is big, warm, round, and sweet - just like any other semi-hollow I've played. Have you played one or checked one out up close? There is plenty of hollow space in there! I could stash my stamp collection in there.

Well we can definitely agree on that! I love the way it sounds. The stock Duncan Design pups were trash (but I've played other DDs that are killer) and stole the life away from the guitar. I have a set of custom High Order pups in it now, and WOW.

It's wonderfully sensitive to amp, stomp box, EQ, overdrive, distortion... Just a tone monster. I've found that I can cover a lot of ground really well with it. It always has a warm, fat tone (of course), and for lead playing it just sings and sings and sings.

Its sweetness and warmth is also what limits the guitar. Maybe it's me, but it's not a guitar for Lynch/EVH style theatrics - harmonics are not its strong point. And it just wouldn't work for Opeth or something like that. But for most styles between the extremes it rocks.

Rock on

Someone above aready said Ted Nugent but he is worth saying it again!!!! Man that guy rips on Solid bodies, Semi Hollows, and complete Hollow Bodies.... He does it all!

I appreciate your effort to reassure me... but Brian Setzer doesn't rock hard. He's a good example of what I'm afraid of!!

I WILL DESTROY YOU

I'll give you $50 if you can outplay brian, on your best day. I guarantee it won't happen

and he's not just the guy that did jump jive & wail, he's been in various bands since the 80's, each a little bit different

once again, i now hate you and wish you the worst of luck

:laugh2: "Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny."

I think the problem here lies in your interpretation of "rock hard". I did not, and would not ever, trash Setzer's musicianship or the value of his music. To me, "rocking hard" is about walls of Marshalls, loud guitars, angst, loud guitars, distortion, more distortion, and even more distorted, loud, angst-ridden guitars cranked through Marshalls. Know what I mean?

It doesn't matter how great a player Setzer is - he ain't what I just described! And he wouldn't give a sh!t either, he's great at his own thing.

I wouldn't say that Dimebag "swings like no other cat." Would you? But that's no shame on him - he does something else. But I think you could say that Setzer "swings like no other cat."

But he doesn't rock hard. And I stand by my words! Bring it on, baby!
