My problem is that I feel a little funny rocking out with a semi-hollow. It sounds cool, feels great... but I'm worried that it looks lame.

Can it be done, without looking totally out of place or silly? Those guys usually play SGs, Pauls, Explorers, or esoteric pawn shop stuff with indie cred.

Now of course if you're secure enough, you can play anything and make it look cool.
Doing the "indie rock" thing is cool. Back in the day I wanted guitars that were different from what everyone else was playing. I wanted a Telecaster, but I didn't want one like everyone else had- I ended up with a 72-ish Tele Custom. I'd never seen one like it, and (other than Keef) didn't see another one until Tom Chochrane's "Life is a Highway" video. I wanted a LP, but didn't want one like everyone elses, I got a really cool lookin' Deluxe with the stupid mini-humbuckers.

In as much as a black hoodie, horn rimmed glasses, backpack, SGs and dyed black hair is a uniform- do it your way. As cool as Ian MacKaye is, it's more cool to be yourself than a second rate interpretetation of Ian MacKaye.

Look at my sig... Half the time, I'm playing blues. Any of those look like blues axes?

My ESP Mirage Custom is a peach/pinkish type color and I rock that thing out on metal.

No way! Really? Tom Morello is, along with the previously mentioned Alex Lifeson, one of my very favorite players. I'm guess I'm nuts to worry about this at all.

You guys are the best. Thanks! :bigthumb:

I think playing metal with a guitar like that makes you even MORE metal. :laugh2: Rock on!

Exactly. I know the pointy 80's guitars are coming back in metal and some other circles, I need to see all these screamo bands playing pink Explorers and neon green V's! :)

Oh and now I rock with a semi too!

Re: Who rocks hard with a semi-hollow? You? Famous Rock Stars?

Dude, don't worry about it.
Semi's can rock very hard. I use a Sheraton loaded with Phat Cats and an Alleykat with a Gibson mini in the neck and a C5 in the bridge.

Re: Who rocks hard with a semi-hollow? You? Famous Rock Stars?

Warren Haynes gets wicked tones with his 335.....

Re: Who rocks hard with a semi-hollow? You? Famous Rock Stars?

I have the Foo Fighters DVD and Chris Shiflett plays with black and tobacco sunburst ES guitars most of the night and it goes to show that leads can sound awesome on semi-hollows.

Alex Lifeson is the man and he used to rock ES-335s on the older stuff, just like Alvin Lee Fan mentioned.

I've considered picking up a semi-hollowbody Gibby myself :)

Chris Shiflett the second guitarist in the Foo Fighters uses lots of Semi hollows. the guitar i've seen him use the most recently has been a black ES-335 dot neck. good tone too IMO.

Dammit... you beat me to it :fing2:

LOVE the Foos! :D

Re: Who rocks hard with a semi-hollow? You? Famous Rock Stars?

Nicke from the Hellacopters
Dregen from Backyard Babies
Greg Steele from Faster Pu55ycat all used (use) a 335

Ted's Byrd is hollow not semi but same idea for this anyway.

Give the new EPi Dot Studio in black a whirl, a dynamite cheapo Semi, it'll look sullen enough and if it doesn't work for you it was only pennies.

Oh yeah Setzer rocks harder than 99.99999% of this earth!

Re: Who rocks hard with a semi-hollow? You? Famous Rock Stars?

Don't forget Malcolm Young- AC/DC always uses a semi- hollow Gretsch, don't tell me he don't rock.

Oh yes, he rocks. Harder than just about anyone else!

Foos, Malcolm, Izzy, Morello, plus all the other rockin' players mentioned... I'd have to say I'm feeling pretty silly about worrying about this in the first place. Note that my Elite is now up on the chopping block on The Trading Post!

Should I also sell my horn-rim glasses and Addidas soccer shoes?

:beerchug:

I'm also relieved that no one made fun of me too hard. I really stuck my neck out on this one...

Re: Who rocks hard with a semi-hollow? You? Famous Rock Stars?

I soooo love my 335. Its my fav. HB guitar, but I am not a hard player I tend to play rock and blues. These guitars can be problematic when you play with high volume and high gain they have a tendency to squeal due to air in the chambers. I have stuffed mine with foam, but wax dipping the PUPS usually will eliminate most squealing issues.

Yeah, but NOTHING beats that feeling of vibration and life when you hit a power chord and just let it ring! With a semi-hollow, it feels like the guitar is so alive, ready to leap out of your hands.

Makes it worth the feedback hassle, to me.

I was afraid of the same issues, I stand about 3 feet in front of my Marshall, and I've never had a problem with squeel and feedback. I was surprised!
