Re: Your Favorite Marshall

I'm voting plexi becuae it's the closest thing to a JTM45 among those listed ,and the Jubilee isn't listed. I know that alot of people like to exclude the JTM45 from plexis with SS rectifiers, but the JTM45 is essentially a plexi. Unlike the 50 and 100 watt plexis the JTM45 is more managable as far as volume. The JTM45 has a exceptional clean tone and it does those singing medium gain distortions better than any other amp at gig volumes IMO.

This is the basic problem with the Jubilees, and I have a couple of them, you either have a high gain distortion or a clean in practice. It's more difficult to get those sweet almost clean overdrives inbetween those two extremes. They have this "rythim clip" mode that is suppossed to give a more AC/DC light distortion at low volumes, but I never use it, because don't find it that authentic.

I do like Jubilees for giging though, because they are among the best as far as getting a real good Marshall tone at the required volume levels, they have channel switching, an FX loop, and they have one the better cleans among EL34 amps.

Re: Your Favorite Marshall

I have played plenty of Marshalls.... And as far as my ears went, it was perfectly Marshall ;)
As Rid would say, you've got dead ears. :eyecrazy: I owned one for 3 years, giged with it. It was suppose to compete with Mesa's that really kicked marshall's but in the late 90's as far as market share went. So marshall tried to be itself and give something on top what ever it was that made people leave for Mesa. Well anyway, it aint really a marshall. I am not the only one here who ears that. Also, they are beginning to be a "ampt tech regulars" starting with input jacks. Also confirmed by others on this board.

Re: Your Favorite Marshall

I got a nice 100 watt dsl. The reverb died on it, but I usually set low anyway, so I didn't even notice til someone else plugged in. It's really versatile for what my band plays. Anything from the Cranberrys to Metallica.

I did get a Vintage Modern bout a month and 1/2 ago. It was a good price for a 100 watt head and 4x12 cab. I like the distortion from this amp.:naughty:

Re: Your Favorite Marshall

Old or the new HW Plexi's. But I still love my Silver 2555. I crank the output vol and use the pre-amp
vol as master. Gets those power tubes cookin'.

JCM 900 MkIII and SL-X but the MkIII is my top pick. I love that amp. It's basically a hotrodded 2203/2204 with dual master volumes that are switchable (rhythm/lead). Just a great, straight up rock and roll amp. Don't dis the 900 line until you've played through one.

Here is mine, it is a 1988 1987s. The first RI Marshall head made, it is actually a metal face, with toggle switches, not a plexi. I tweaked it a bit, shared cathode V!, lowered the filtering, upped a few caps. It sounds quite tasty to me.

My other favorite Marshall is my STRAMP, german Superbass clone from the early 70s. Tiz truly a monster!

Re: Your Favorite Marshall

900 was my first half stack. Still have my 900 4X12 as my main 4X12. I would take 900 over the DSL. Its a huge shame that Mode 4 is not represented int this thread.

Re: Your Favorite Marshall

I went 800, had an early model. It just had the old school hard rock sound that I love. I was an idiot for selling it. My buddy's JMP MkII MV is a close second...that amp is great. I prefer the MkII slightly for hard rocking blues over the 800, but it's so close as to be unimportant.

I've played Plexi RIs, cool amps, but I prefer a MV. I owned a 900, uh, well...played DSLs, seemed pretty cool, but not actually owning one makes it difficult to comment w/confidence.

I have not played a TSL, JVM, or Vintage Modern. I really want to try the Vintage Modern.
