2x12 or 4x12?

I'm thinking of getting a shiny new Orange cab to go with my AD-30.. and I'm torn between a 4x12 and a 2x12. The 2x12 would be easier to transport (both from a size standpoint and a weight standpoint) and would cost me about $200 less than a 4x12, but I'm concerned that I might not be pushing enough air with a 2x12 as opposed to a 4x12. The Orange 4x12's are heavier than any other 4x12 I've ever lifted.. so the thought of lugging one around to gigs kinda turns me off the idea. I could always get another 2x12 if it turned out I needed more than just one 2x12.

Thoughts?

Im sure that the 2x12 is enough to drive that head and if transportation is a hassle then it will suit you more.

I like 212s for their size and weight.. but I like 412s for their tone.

Just one advice.. if your gonna buy a 212 cab, get a quility 212 cab, other wise, you might not be very happy. Alot of people have said good things about those Genz Benz 212 cabs.

It'd be an Orange 2x12. From personal experience with them and from what I've heard from friends, I've no doubts about their quality. :dance:

4x12 if you're without help from the PA.. did a gig tonight, you could hear the 4x12 has a lot more spread across the stage..

2x12, more than enough for me, but I'm running a 120watt head.

*Edit* Mine is also an upright, vert cab, and it has casters.

Had a Carvin halfstack for awhile. The 4x12 didn't have wheels so I always needed help. Plus it was hard to see over in the backseat of my car! Traded it for a Marshall 1936 2x12, bit shorter than the 4x12, but lighter to carry. Added a recto 2x12 to my setup, a Nomad 100 watt, so together it's almost like 1 4x12. The Marshall sounds warm, and the recto is brighter ands sounds a bit louder.

A 4x12 sounds like 4 amps, which is cool, but not cool enough to make me buy a new car to haul it around in. I think an Orange 2x12 should look and sound amazing. Really 4x12s were invented at a time when people played large theaters and arenas without micing their guitars. They sound great, and if I could employ roadies, I'd get one, but 2x12 or even 1x12 is enough - and in lots of places if you mic your amp you've got sound coming out of 2x15s, subwoofers, horns, all kinds of stuff.

30 EL-84 watts into 2x12s is a classic sound, and your Orange should do it up.

4x12 is higher and easier to hear in a band situation. I have muscles and it does not hurt me to lift mine It has casters and it easier to push than a 2x12, because I don't have to bend over to push it - therefore it's actually easier on my back.

i always thought i needed 4x12 cabs.... that's why i still have 2 marshall 4x12 cabs. With my avt 150h cranked all the way up they weren't very loud. Now that i have my dsl100 i rarely use them. I have an avatar 2x12 with vintage 30's in it. I'm all about being extremely loud and that handles it with no problem with great tone as well. Any club i've played i could use either. The only time i use my two marshall cabs is when i play a decent size show and if i'm not using a mic on my cab going to the pa. It's not because the 2x12 isn't loud enough but doesn't cover the audience without giving extreme loud spots and dead spots. i like having a cab on each side of the stage.

I think you'll find a 212 cab will be plenty. I don't even own a 412 anymore, though they'd be nice at times in some of our outdoor jobs, just 'cuz they fill up a bit more sound space.

I am a fan of both 4x12s and 2 x12s; both have their moments to be used. Although, I sold my 4x12 and bought a 2x12 for portability and ease. IMHO you "almost" every time are going to get your cab mic, doesn't matter the size of the gig, so I figure if I am having a 4x12 mic anyways I rather go for a 2x12. I know is not always the case for some but is the most I've seen.....

Right now, I'm leaning towards a 2x12 setup with an amp stand or something like that (to elevate it to ear level).. I'll keep you guys posted on how this develops.

I think you are going to like the 2x12 idea. You can always get a custom 2x12 witn an angle baffle.

i'm going to go ahead and say go with the 4x12. i'm a small guy, and a lot of the time i end up carrying my 4x12 up and down stairs without any trouble. granted it makes things a ton easier if you have someone else who is willing to help you carry it. but with a 4x12, you'll be able to hear yourself much better in a live situation with it being higher up off the floor.
