CTN builds a Star

Re: CTN builds a Star

I keep seeing mentions of people reusing strings, but I never understood how they do it.

The kinks from bending over almost 90 degree angles and the tight winds from the tuners kinda make it impossible to thread through the string-through-body channels and rewind them on the tuners tightly

Unless you guys have some super secret method of straightening strings that I haven't learned about yet....

Plus, strings are cheap. There's not much point in re-using them.

Re: CTN builds a Star

Home Depot sells Watco lacquer in spray cans, which are supposed to be nitro, but I opted for the Dover stuff cuz they come with an adjustable (vertical/horizontal/diagonal) nozzle. Also the High gloss thing appealed to me. Normal gloss is the highest that the Watco stuff comes in.

They were about the same price as the Watco stuff anyway.

Re: CTN builds a Star

well, I hit a snag.

I screwed up part of the decal.

When I checked it this morning, it had dried out fully and was lying flat. I had cut the "CTN" part separate from the "polaris"maybe I put a bit too much clear on it, cuz the polaris part of the decal developed some tiny blisters, and they're proving nigh impossible to get out, even after pricking them and trying to squeeze out the air.

Not sure what to do at this point...I'm strongly considering cutting out the Polaris part, and redoing that part of the finish...

blargh :(

Re: CTN builds a Star

UGH.

I screwed up. again.

There are no words. Just one picture of a terrible mistake. I'm thinking I might just sand off all the clear lacquer built up so far... remove the remaining part of the decal, and do it all over again.

Except that I now need a new decal, and well...I gotta find a way to get it done by the end of the week if I'm to stay on schedule.

The alternative is that I blow off the schedule and just take the time to fix this properly...which seems like a more reasonable course of action, and ultimately the right one. Canada being Canada, it's apparently impossible to find any where locally or around the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) that sells waterslide decal paper, at least, none that I can find online.

Needless to say, I'm pretty pissed at myself. *grumble grumble grumble*

F it. I need to go for a drive and get over this (in my eyes) colossal setback. (also, it's a really nice night out, and I've been meaning to go for a nice night-drive for a while)

Re: CTN builds a Star

The lacquer under the decal needs more time to harden before it gets re-activated by the clear on top of a decal. If it were me, I'd remove the decal and let the finish harden for a month or two, and re-visit the headstock/decal part of the project further along the track.

Also ... did you give the decal a few very fine mist coats of lacquer before applying them ? That helps decals resist the shock of being hit with full coats of lacquer.

Yeah I misted it.

F**k. this is totally going to shaft my schedule and there's nothing I can do about it, apparently.

Yeah, tomorrow I'm gonna take it all off as well as whatever clear coat I can. I'll repaint the colour coat to make sure it looks ok, and then I'll have to wait for a new decal.

F**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k,!!!!!!!!!!

Re: CTN builds a Star

nah, I want the finish to cure properly after completing all the spraying.

The last thing I want is for the clear coats to somehow get damaged because they didn't fully cure by the time gig day comes around.

Re: CTN builds a Star

7 days, according to Dover when I contacted them. I budgeted two weeks for curing, just to be safe.
