Re: Do you use Straplocks?

There is one thing I will say about strap locks, they always seem to be one of the first things novice modders put on their instrument. They think it's an easy brick to put in their yellow brick road to a perfect guitar. That and locking tuners as well.

That's smart place to start. (Not so sure about locking tuners).

I got bag of schallers cheaply some years ago and have been using them since. Theyre great.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I use Schallers on my Les Pauls.

I use the stock pins on my Fenders and PRS.

I know; they’re just the worst, right? New players really need to be thrashing their guitars against the floor, or at least losing their place in a song, every time a strap slips.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

All of my Gibsons and any other electric guitar that leaves the house get Dunlops. I tend to play my acoustics while sitting, so I don't really need a strap for any of them.

I initially had Schallers on my Explorer, but in the summer of 2000 or 2001 I had the 'U' on the strap flip upside down and release while I was playing. Luckily I was able to catch the guitar before it hit the ground. I switched to Dunlops as soon as I was able to find a pair and haven't looked back. I always tug on the strap after attaching it, and I've never had one release provided that it was properly attached in the first place.

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine with his Marc Bolan Les Paul except his hit the ground. No serious damage but like you, I always make 100% sure mine are locked.
And every couple of weeks I double check that the strap buttons on the guitar itself are properly tightened.
I once played an entire gig with a strap button that had worked itself about 90% of the way out. As we finished the gig and I was removing the strap, the button fell out the rest of the way!

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I have Schaller strap locks on my '98 Fender American Std. guitar in my avatar and Jim Dunlop strap locks on my '06 Epiphone Les Paul Std. I'd say they are both comparable in quality and are very functional indeed.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

That's why these new Schaller's look so good. They come with a little wrench to snug the threaded cap and then a set screw to lock that in place, like the set screws on locking bridges and tailpiece. Nothing is 100%, but these look damn good.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Mechanical locks on heavy and expensive guitars, T shaped end pens on everything else.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Been playing 40 years.
Been using Dunlop dual design 13 years no issues.
Most horror stories ive heard with straplocks involve user error.
I change the strap part every couple years to keep them fresh.
Have you ever heard of a Dunlop strap lock becoming so corroded that it wouldn't release?

I put strap locks on my recently acquired Strat as soon as I got it. I put locking tuners on it last week. Good to know after 20 years I'm still a novice. Thanks. That's super helpful information. :biglaugh:

Maybe in another 20 years I'll stop that, be able to accept my guitar falling during after a raucous gig and my guitar taking longer to restring and THEN OH MY GAWD I'LL BE A REAL BOY.

This is literally the video that prompted this thread. :D

First I've seen the new model. I've never had a problem with the old ones but I use a socket and loctite to hold in place. That looks like a very nice improvement.

Same here. I didn’t know they had upgraded the locks. These look great!

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I have Dunlops on most of my Les Pauls.
Guitars that have a strap button behind the heel get rubber washers.
The Fenders & PRSs don't need 'em.
But my old warbird Floydcasters have them; back in the 80s I used strapocks on all my axes regardless of need.

I bet you put a Jazz/JB combo in it and put a few stickers on it too. :D

I'm not saying they are bad things, I just think they are a bit like spoilers on cars, some people with little experience think it's a valuable upgrade regardless of the situation. An example would be a kid I met once trying to show me how cool his custom modded axe was. He put locking tuners on it (behind a locking nut, which mitigates one of the two reasons to get them, but that's for an different day) and strap locks. This was a kid that plays sitting down 95% of the time. He didn't take his guitar or himself into consideration and spent $100 for a couple of mods that did very little for him.

maybe he plans to stand up one day

i plan to put locking tuners on my floyded Ibanez
but only cuz it makes srting changes easier
and it annoys some people

truly none of your business what that kid does to his axe
