Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Is it wrong to post how I think it's funny that they used an emoticon as a pickup name?

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I saw from earlier that they have a threaded locking wheel instead of a bolt, I was wondering if there were any other improvements. I don't know the specifics, but it seems to me like that's the only substantial difference.

Well, it addresses the only substantial weakness of the original design.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Also, I’d like to say that having the original strap button screw holes is the last thing I care about on my guitars. I didn’t have any 1950 Broadcasters, or a ‘58 Flying V last time I checked.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I'm really more talking about the justification for the modding rather than lack of experience. Putting strap locks on a guitar because you like them or find them a requirement to make it through a show without dropping your guitar is different then putting them on a guitar because the clerk at Guitar Center said you needed them to have a pro level instrument, am I making sense now?

And I did point out to the kid that he was using the locking tuners wrong, as he was winding his strings the same way you would with non locking tuners.

You are indeed making more sense now. Thank you for clarifying. :)

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

But I'll admit, the skillful engineering put into the S-Locks as well as the large variety of shades of chrome make me want to put a set on one of my heavier guitars. I'll have to take a look at them.

But the fact that no one felt the need to change the design from the first model for near 40 years speaks volumes about the quality of the original.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I usually put my wireless pack on my strap, Schallers make it fast and easy to swap guitars

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Absolutely, on everything. It amazes me that guitars don't automatically come with a better system to hold on to a strap. I am using the new Schaller S-Locks, which are a big improvement over the standard ones of the past 30 years. There is no noise, they are more secure, and have a much better system to install them on a strap.

I hadnt seen the new S Locks till you mentioned. Those look amazing!! Love the screw/button combo. Many times Ive spun a screwdriver around in the screw and wrecked the ability to torque it all the way down.

Cool how you use the hex key to torque the ring down. whats the black rubber ring for?

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Not to derail the thread, but I have a question.. Strap lock users, do you drill the holes larger or just screw in the screw? I usually just screw in the screw, but always worry it'll crack the wood. (strap lock screws are normally larger diameter then stock screws)

Thanks

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

I can’t recall ever needing to enlarge the hole. Usually I am repairing a stripped hole.

One thing I try to do on fresh holes is drop some thin CA glue in the hole to harden the wood. This prevents the wood from stripping.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Personally I think strap locks are over engineered, especially the new s locks. All my guitars have their own strap and I simply put the strap on, put a washer over it, and then screw the strap pin in. The strap will never fall off and if you need a less permanent solution, the beer washers work as well as was said before.

I agree with this for guitars that are left out on stands or hangers, but for some guitars/cases the strap must be removed at one end at least to fit in the case properly,,,,,,unless one modded the case of course lol.

This is one nice thing about the Lock-It straps,,,,,,,easy on/off. Buy a couple/few and you're set. (if you have different body shapes and you don't want to adjust the lengths when switching back-and-forth)

There's no rubber ring..it is a felt washer. I have a set on the desk next to me. The small hex bolt on the ring is a safety measure- once you lock it down by turning it, the small hex bolt further locks it.

Re: Do you use Straplocks?

Is using them more an overly cautious thing for everyone? Or are you doing some sort of acrobatics/jumping around while playing?

My thought is that the traditional strap button that almost every guitar uses is ill-equipped to hold a stretchable hole in leather under normal playing circumstances.

Yeah I get that for sure. I only have one leather strap because of that. I use Levy's and D'Adarrio nylon. The newer Levy's ones use a great heavy, stiff material at the ends that does not stretch. I use a thin one for my lighter weight Horizon and a wide one for my heavy Schecter LP. My guitars are really well balanced so the nylon doesn't slide or move at all on my shoulder either.
