Gibson M-III Returns!

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Has anyone played one of the new ones?

With gibby pricing, having played the pure WIN awesomeness of the originals, I just dont see how the new ones could match up... The old M-III is easily the most player friendly Ive ever seen. Gibson today would charge 5+k for that kind of feel

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Bump for feedback on how these play! Being a Gibson that *isn't* a Les Paul, SG or 335 it's unlikely that we'll see many of these in Australia, but I could probably be convinced it's worth the effort of tracking one down...

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Just picked up a modded player condition first year original issue '91 Standard with new electronics installed to include a SD Jazz/JB TB set as well as Gibson OHSC...

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

no the middle single coil is just removed ;)

gibson has been using that style single coil for a long time. replacing them is a pita and they are usually pretty lame. check out the nighthawk

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

^^ Cool, and the rare 2hb version at that!

Nope, it's a player where the second owner pulled the pickguard and electronics and mounted the HBs with rings; there's an uncovered single coil slot where a Gibson NSX use to reside. ;)

Originally, it looked like the below pic...

Gonna play it a while as is and decide upon swapping out pickups as I have a stash and could potentially redo it w/the MIII Wiring...Be-otch of it will be finding a pickguard. Since this one's a player I have options; reinstall a 5 way, drop in a Classic Stack in middle, use the DPDT Toggle for all three pickups to split 'em or route out the middle and install a SD Slash/EVH Frankenstein/CS Super V Set kind of like the Steinberger Version.

Hmmm, I can't wrap my head around the top horn...looks funky lol But I always like those style headstocks.

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Someone commented that the body shape was more like a Bass Body Shape. They're actually quite comfortable to play. I'll post some pics of it next to my Soloist/Stratocaster/Pacer and Iceman for comparison.

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

Arrived this afternoon. Brought it home, wiped it down, tuned it as the seller had loosened the nut and strings for shipping, and got to plug it in for a half hour. Mini-Toggle is wired for Neck or Bridge...two positions...but I played around with the pickup height and pretty much found what I considered the sweet spot with only a couple turns on each pickup. Super low action and the neck feels nice; more comfortable than I remember the prior ones I've owned being. Jazz/JB TB sounded really nice through the 5150. Looking forward to spending some time playing it tomorrow evening.

Re: Gibson M-III Returns!

I'd been speculating that they were bringing back the Norlin era, and now I know they are!
