How many picks do you own?

Re: How many picks do you own?

So this thread is really getting to me.... now that I have been paying attention -I truly have issues.

It's like what they say about spiders, your never 3ft away from one? -yeah at any point in my house or studio I can find within arms reach now that I am paying attention.

I'm not good at throwing them away, my version of whats a worn pick and whats useable to a guest are entirely different -so I tend to save them all.

need therapy.

Too funny. Excellent post!!! LOL!!!

Re: How many picks do you own?

Hundreds. Dozens of gauges, styles, and colors.

Re: How many picks do you own?

I've been experimenting with 3 printing my own picks recently.

Right now I have reached the point where I can make a durable pick into the right shape with a good texture, but I haven't gotten then pliable enough yet. I'm still working out the finer details for that. I'll send a picture tommorow of my current design.

We are about to get a new printer though, so there's a chance I might have some better models out in a little while.

I am curious how much does it cost you to 3D print a pick? I have paid 25c or $10 for a pick so if it does what you want I don't think the price is really an issue. I am just curious as I said.

Re: How many picks do you own?

Dammit... I swear.... there are like 100 under my Marshall stack that I haven't moved away from the wall in over a year until tonight. -also a clip on tuner, a patch cable, an EHX 9v power supply, a Morley A/B switch, a 60s Standel Reverb switcher pedal, and several band stickers

Who knows how many I'm going to find now that this thread has made me self conscious.

It's really an inconsequential amount. On the small scale it probably cost more than it's worth, but it's quite fun to design your own picks, and if one day I find out how to perfect my picks, I can print them off for less than the price of gas to go to GC.

Re: How many picks do you own?

at work we have a 3d printer making hole plugs that are about the size of a pick

after the initial cost of the printer the spools of media are really inexpensive
it costs less than one cent each to print

but they are printing 30 at a time

Re: How many picks do you own?

I probably have around 50 picks in my possession. I tend to lose them more often than wearing them out, but I haven't had to buy new ones in years!

I went through a metal picks phase a while ago--I was into the copper "Hot Licks" picks and also have some stainless steel ones that an associate gave me (he has his business info printed on them and hands them out as his business cards). I still have about a half dozen picks from the last SD User Group Day, as well as some picks from Gravity and V-Pick that they sent me for free (anyone remember a few years back when both companies were offering complimentary samplers to members on this forum? They're kind of expensive, but I've been revisiting some of the more traditional (351) shapes and they're my current favorites; they're pretty solid and have zero flex to them.

Also bought one of those Pick Punch devices that can create picks from old gift cards, credit cards, etc., so I have a few dozen of those in a jar. I don't use those for playing guitar, though--as it turns out, credit/gift card material is just a little too soft for me taste in terms of flexibility, so I mostly use them at work, where they are very useful as a tool for removing iPads and iPhones from their protective cases. I had better results purchasing some Delrin sheets and making guitar picks out of those.

Re: How many picks do you own?

Here's one I made for one of my interns:

20190125_103644.jpg

I told him about my pick printing, and he asked for a moderately wide, thin pick that was fairly rigid.

I made this one with 100% infill PLA so that it would be 1mm thick. I haven't given it to him yet, but it seems like he would like it. I'm trying to make mine thinner and more flexible, but the printers are limited as to how thin you can make a pick before you start to sacrifice durability.

Re: How many picks do you own?

A few. Picks used to be a weird obsession.

Re: How many picks do you own?

Jesus, this thread.....

Last night I picked up a GK 400RB head to move in so I could play my new Travis Bean/Kramer Bass through my SVT and under the head was 3 more bags of new picks. One was those awful triangle nacho shaped Tortex picks, one has Gray and WHite Dunlops, and one was terrible old Hercos.

I'm going to therapy soon!

Oh man. You crack me up!!! LOL!!! Too funny. And always appreciated.

They are EVERYWHERE! because I owned a working recording studio for 25 years -I think I got in the habit of never throwing them away because bands always showed up wanted and looking for certain picks, in 2006 when I moved my Studio to my new home because I was traveling and working so much on other Studios, I think the studio picks and the habit followed me home.

But seriously, I never thought about it once -until this damn thread -then I start looking around and they are f*cking everywhere. I'm scared to know how many are under my washer and Dryer because there are dozens on each side!

I never leave the house without a couple Dunlop yellows and oranges (for acoustic chill) in my jean's drug pocket and in my jacket

I have a pick hoarding complex now. :lmao:

For those who experimented 3D printing to make picks:
What kind of plastics is used ?

Well, Dunlops are made from Delrin -but a proprietary blend.

For 3d Printing your basic options are:

ABS Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene -Stiff and Brittle -not the greatest for picks because it wears faster
PLA Polylactic Acid Strong, Ductile and resists wear -most common material for printing picks I'd imagine
Nylon Polyamide -Strong -not easy to work with but makes a decent pick -they have several modern version of Nylon that are better than what we are used to from Herco etc.
PETG Polyethylene Terephthalate -doubt this is used
PolyPropylene PP -Not a great fit for picks.

Re: How many picks do you own?

I used PLA for my interns pick, but all the other ones I've made are from nylon. Honestly, other than the less than uniform texturing that the printer gives you, it feels the same as a Dunlop. I'll post a picture of my "Mark III" on Monday. It's the same shape as the above, but 0.9mm thick 70% infill nylon. I also improved the texturing on it.

The only problem that I've come across while printing picks is that you can only add bumps to the one side because the support structure is so strong that at this small a scale it is too time consuming with too much risk of damaging the pick to be worth it.
