I've got a chance to snag a 50 watt JMP

Re: I've got a chance to snag a 50 watt JMP

I had that same head for a while. It's a 2204 with vertical inputs (that's good :) ) It does have that late 70s April Wine tone which I still love. I used an attenuator with it because you have to crank the master to get that Marshall animal to come out.

It is not "the kind" for clean tone but it's definitely great for the dirty stuff.

Re: I've got a chance to snag a 50 watt JMP

I forgot to mention that I modified mine to use EL34 power tubes. I like those a little more for the Marshall tone.
I have a bunch of clips here

Re: I've got a chance to snag a 50 watt JMP

Definitely cool amps. I've had a few 50W Master Volume Marshalls, and while they're not that versatile, they get THE rock tone, and are a blast with a Les Paul or PRS.

I scored that little 30W 1986 Marshall combo a few days ago, and even though it's solid state, it has the same basic tone. I was getting some awesome tones out of it, when I put the Klon overdrive or T. Rex Mudhoney Fuzz in front of it. I almost forgot it wasn't a 50W tube halfstack, it sounded so good!

I think if you're getting a good price on that amp, just dive in and buy it. If you ever decide to sell it, it won't be difficult to find a buyer.

Re: I've got a chance to snag a 50 watt JMP

Thanks for the continued help guys!

I went over to the shop and played it a bit here are the specs.

1982 2204
50W supplied by 6550's
Vertical inputs
very very clean

Cab had speakers that say 30 on them. Am I correct in assuming that those are the G12-30H? very very clean as well checkerboard design cab

The master and preamp vol. both were very smooth, and a tone of tones were available.

He was planning on putting it on Ebay for 1500. He told me 1400, I think I might can get it for less, though, but I don't know how MUCH less.

Amp & cab for $1400?

Yeah..I'd go for that..those are going to be the NEXT collectible Marshalll..cos they were basically ignored...they fell between the hallowed PLexis, and the current "buy em as fast you can" 800 series. People who have experience with them know they are killer amps...but as the 800s are drying up...those are gonna go up..cos they DO sound really good.

An 82 JMP?
I thought that they were 800's by then, but I was assured it was an 82. I think the inside the original owner wrote the date.

It sounds quite a bit like an 800, but can still get that super leadish sound.

They were 800's in 1981. Get the serial number for verification.

Re: I've got a chance to snag a 50 watt JMP

ok well i got my hot mod for my '79 50w JMP today and all im going to say is buy that amp and get a hot mod for it!! man this thing is an animal now...i just need a hot plate or air brake bad b/c it does still sound thin at low volume but as you crank it up....DAMN it gets beastly with the hot mod in it! without the hot mod i was never big on the amp since i likey da gain (lol) but now it's pretty damn cool.

Well it says JMP on the small SL style plate....maybe it was MADE long before? It has a very smooth volume and Gain pot, which I've heard were rarities at that time.

It also has the non-detachable cord.

Re: I've got a chance to snag a 50 watt JMP

Jeff: now that it has the soldano hot mod in it i actually like it. unfortunatly it's still way too loud for home use so i need to get a airbrake or hot plate for it badly. the thing sounds great when cranked but without an airbrake or hot plate at low volumes it's still too thin for me. once the volume goes up though it starts to scream and be much fuller and better! i think thats why i never liked the amp b/c i could never crank it at home for it to reach good tone. plus it never had enough gain for me but now one problem is solved with the hot mod the next will be an airbrake i think and then i may be able to actually use the amp more.

Detachable power cords were around by '79, my '78 is still hardwired. Did it have the removable impedance selector? That was an 1979 change.

Ever since the thread about the toggle switched JCM 800s, I don't trust myself about Marshall knowlege.

Please don't show us pics showing that. I ran out of napkins to wipe the drool of my keyboard. :D

The impedance selector looks the same as the one on your Park. It has a 500mA fuse and a 3 amp fuse. Both are on the right hand side. It has the lighted rocker switch.

The wood inside is not painted but raw, like your Park.

oh and it's also the evil amp with 666 in the serial number hehe.

Re: I've got a chance to snag a 50 watt JMP

So it has the dial impedance selector and the hardwired power cable. Every 79 I remember seeing has had the removable power cord and dial impedance selector. So it sounds more like a transitional '79, as '82 would make no sense at all.

You really can't look at the cabinet of my Marshall as much of an identifier. First, it came from a 100w amp, second, someone who owned the 100w head before me had blocked up the top vent and taken a strip of tolex off the bottom and glued it to the top. I don't know why.
