Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

There are absolutely standards. The standards are set by other guitars by other brands in the same price range. Go play 3 PRS Custom 24's and then play 3 Les Paul Standards. Maybe then you'll understand.

PRS sets the 'standards' for Gibson quality? Interesting. This will come a quite a shock to Gibson. Perhaps PRS influences customer expectations of what guitars in that price range should be like, but sets the standards for another company with different ownership? If I didn't know better, I'd almost think you're slipping with a gem like that.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

You obviously didn't read the whole post - I said that standards are set by other brands, not PRS in particular. I used PRS as an example because most every guitar center will have at least a few PRSi and a few Gibsons.

Now I see why LesStrat said you're illiterate.

Yeah, I'd agree with LesStrat, but then you come up with another gem. No one sets quality standards for Gibsons, except Gibson. Other companies influence customer expectations, not limited to PRS.

Personal insults are widely known to be irrefutable proof that someone is truly right and confident in the validity of the views. You got me again!

Other companies influence customer expectations

Other companies, via their own internal quality standards, set the customer's expectation of a standard of quality that X dollar amount will buy

Same difference

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

Meh, if I was going to spend that kind of money on a guitar i'd just spend a little more commissioning a guy like Ken Lawrence to build me a better guitar that's completely custom. Or i'd get a Suhr. When I think of modern Gibson I think of Les Pauls, robot guitars, and reverse Explorers and V's. Seems like today there are quite a few companies/luthiers that do the Gibson thing better than Gibson does these days.....and sometimes for a fraction of the price. I had a 1992 Les Paul Standard and an Explorer later in the 90's (not Epiphone), ended up selling them both and to be honest I like the ESP Eclipse I have today more than I liked either of those guitars (and I only spent a grand on it).

That's just me though.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

This is the essence of mistaking anecdotal for average: "I, a single point of data, represent the average of all data".

Buying something doesn't make you an expert in the market of that thing. Many people are knowledgeable about markets, such as investors, in which they are not personally invested.

Poor logic would be to conclude that Gibson is acting against it's own interests, simply because you don't know what motivates their decisions.

The reason businesses exist is to make money. The way to make money is to sell customers what they're willing to pay for. What Gibson is selling is therefore most likely what typical Gibson customers are willing top pay for, and by virtue of that fact, indicative of what they want.

Yeah, DreX, you're not combative at all...

Yeah and there's Collings if you want a 335 style, they look amazing.

To me the hardest thing to find a substitute for would be an SG. Is it Guild who makes that SG clone like Kim Thayil plays?

I saw a demo of that Guild on Youtube recently. It's not as aesthetically appealing to me as a real SG, but the tone makes up for it.

I'm not a fan of the uneven horn thing like the ESP viper or, to a lesser extent, the Polaris. I do like Thayil's other Guild he plays with a lot though.

Well, not as combative as some people anyway...

Furthermore, I find it incredibly pretentious for you to postulate what the average Gibson Buyer wants. Who are you to say what they want, and since your experience is anecdotal at best, how do you know?!

Rule of thumb: if you're reply an exclamation mark, it might be combative.

Greekdude,
What is that guitar you showed the back of twice. Did you make it? It looks extremely cool. When I had my cheapie L.PJr painted SG cherry, the guy did the exact same thing shaping and smoothing the neck joint. It feels great and looks cool too.

Hello SJB, this is an Ibanez ARZ800. Almost all the past and current ARZ line (set-in necks) have neck joins like that. It's comparable to my Carvin neck-thru join.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

Is anybody else wondering that we only got the fantasy price but not the MAP?

Who knows what they do with MAP.

Re: Just saw this: Gibson cutting production/raising prices/modifying stuff

Again - lot's of speculation and assumptions.

Don't get your panties in a wad -yet.

I will say this; Gibson has left the building of being a Players guitar. Their BUSINESS Model is something noe of understand - except that it has moved way away from instruments to money making.

I actually applied for a Job at Gibson North America. The requirements were stunning, and Scary at the same time. I was not optimistic about the company direction.

You do need to take a seat, and relax though. Understand that they ARE NOT interested in selling to the AVERAGE musician - whoever that is….

And also understand that they CAN run their business under in the name of profit. See Twinky/Hostess for a recent example. Cadillac, Harley Davidson also good recent business cases.

Finally….when income goes up 10% and is an actual 7% decline over 20 years, yet cost of product increases 4000%, doom is on the horizon.
