Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

honestly, you could get a good amount of the tones you're looking for with just a 50w peavey valveking 112 and a decent overdrive, along with the footswitch. i was easily getting punk tones of all types on the gain channel EQ'd bright and midrangey. the range of gain you can get with it is ridiculous, from a light grit to super-thrashy and everything in between. it's 50 tube watts too, so it's definitely loud. brand new, they're only around $400 and the footswitch it $30.

i was using one to gig for a while and i hardly turn the volume past half for a large lounge/bar sized venue. that was un-miked too, just straight up amp. the clean channel also does the fender-type thing fairly alright for when you wanna do your sublime-ey stuff. for the more aggressive up-stroke type stuff that sublime and rancid do, a screamer type pedal on the clean side can do that sound perfectly.

i actually just sold mine on craigslist for around $220. generally, you can find one or two decent ones floating around on there around that price. i'd definitely suggest trying one out before you completely set your sites on a half stack. i'd also suggest trying one out @ a music store where the staff might be able to point you in the right direction if you need help with musical equipment, which is totally not TVs, video games, movies, washers, dryers, computers.... ya know, the stuff they usually have at best buy;)

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

You check out Marshall HAZE or MA series?

no but i did see a marshall haze combo for sale on craigslist. how would a windsor head work with a marshall cab? i saw this guy on youtube with a similar setup and it sounded pretty good.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

It depends on what marshall cab/speakers but it would probably sound really good. The windsor is a very simple to use straight forward rock amp and match it with a marshall cab it'll sound 7x's better then a MG

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

A Haze or MA wiuld fit the bill as well much like the Windsor but you'll find wiith those you pay for that Marshall logo.

thanks man! ya i was looking at a peavey 6505 112 tube combo it sounds like its a good amp!

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

dood i live on craig's even if im not shopping for gear. but when im spending this kind of money on an amp im gonna buy new.

you been to guitar center on elliot (or the one off I-17)? they always seemed to have some crazy used gear laying around (I know, you don't want used, but still - a cheap peavey butcher or something is a nice snag)
cactus music on the west side (if it's still there)?
guitar and keyboard city in mesa (I think they went under)?
Milano's music in mesa? (that place is pretty cool - lots of gits and amps, and nice people working there!!)

the 6505 is a good amp, but i don't believe it's what you're looking for. the clean channel won't be clear sounding enough for the cleans i think you want too much mids and grit. the distortion will be closer to an 80s metal to modern metal type sound, just not as grainy or raw as the valveking will be. the valveking on the other hand will do greenday and rancid all day long, no problem.

Ya but the VK's clean isn't that great either, very very sterile. The VK is a solid beginners tube amp, where as a 6505 is a respectable amp. No offense to you VK owners out there, it's good for what it is a cheaply made tube amp that gives you a semi decent tone. It does take pedals well.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

when im spending this kind of money on an amp im gonna buy new.

You need to get off this idea now before you waste money on something you'll regret.

That MG is junk.

Everyone else is being really nice about this but I'm telling you that if you buy that thing, you will lose money and sound terrible doing it. Since it's obvious you're a younger dude, I cannot advise against this strongly enough. Money is hard to come by when you're a kid, and a bad investment like that amp could set you back for over a year - time that could have been spent getting better and sounding good by playing through a real amp.

You seem like a nice guy and I hope you enjoy whatever you get, but you should really listen to the guys on this forum because they're trying to help you out.

very true, and like i said, 'fairly alright' as far as the clean channel goes. however, imo the VK would be a better choice. and like you said, a solid beginner's tube amp; very meat 'n' potatoes. for what malymal86's goin' for, it more than gets the job done.

Ya very true, for what his needs and budget is, this would suit him very well. At least the VK has some resale value.

Cool man - we were all new to it at one point!

I went through a whole list of embarrassing amps before I wised up and got my first real tube amp. Wasted hundreds in the process. You now have the huge advantage of not having to learn that lesson the hard way!

Very true.

My first tube amp was actually a Peavey Windsor. For what you describe, it's a good amp at a very fair price. LOUD though, very loud.

If you want to take it a step further, I've learned that sometimes more is not always better. You'd be better off with a 1x12 quality amp, that a crap halfstack. Once I moved from my Windsor, I went to Traynor amps, then fender, then mesa, then big mesa amps, lol.

All that to say, you can score the Windsor in confidence, but be mindful of other amps that the guys suggest on here. A 40w 1x12 can be a beast of an amp.

Been there. First head was a Crate GT3500h. Thought it was the coolest thing for the first 3 months until i sold it cause while it was 300 watts and loud, still couldn't get it to cut through and sound good.

Awesome deal on the Cab!! now you got some money to play around on the head with some left for effects or whatever.

Yea that's what i was thinking, what kind of amp mods can i do to a new stock head??

None.

You ain't ready for that by a country mile, and there's no reason you should have to. :) All you'll succeed in doing is messing it up, voiding any warranty it might have, and destroying its resale value.

Just get an amp that sounds good and enjoy it.
