Would an Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror Orange Head (20/15/15 watts) with a 120 watt cab be good for playing live shows ??

With a 120 watt cab you mean? The wattage on the cab is the what the watt rating is. So, it doesn't matter if you have a 120 watt cab, if you have a 15 watt head like a Dark Terror, you'll still be getting a 15 watt amount of power.
If you meant using a Terror head into a 120 watt power amp into a cab, that would most definitely be gig worthy. (assuming my logic is correct.)
But, if you were thinking of using that combo, you could just get a Thunderverb head instead, I'm told the dark terror uses a similar pre-amp voicing.

(more experienced players, if I'm wrong about anything, PLEASE correct me.)

I could definitely play my TH30 at the 15 watts setting live. However, the clean tones would have a good amount of break-up if I had to compete with a loud drummer. Still, if it's miked-up, no problem with monitors.

I'm assuming a micro terror wouldn't have anything close to clean at that point, based on the clips I've heard...

Yes, 120 watt cab * I'll fix that on the post.

I was only thinking of 15 watt head --> 120 watt cab.... i guess that's not a good live amp combo then. I was thinking of the small heads cause they're super convenient.

I need gain, gain and more gain :P

So you're saying a 15 watt head output into a 120 watt cab is good for live shows ?

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

yes, it will be loud enough

yes you can mike it

but, there is a reason that folks use more power

thats why I dig my Orange thunderverb 50 for live shows ;)

I'm assuming for "real" big shows, at proper venues it will be mic'd. Have you used low wattage heads live ?

But for example at a bar, with a drummer, other guitarist, and bassist (not currently :/ :P ) will a 20 watt micro terror, and a 120 watt 2x12 cab be loud enough ?

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

The tiny terror series (so pretty every terror except the mini terror) is designed to go full volume, so I don't think getting a good tone at max would be a problem. The mini terror (based on clips) doesn't have enough gain for your music. If you did go for a Terror, I'm told that the Dark Terror is best for metal.

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

Dude from Clutch uses a Tiny Terror live, mixed with a big boy amp (I forgot what, probably an old Marshall of some sort).

I own a epiphone valve junior and my guitarist in my last band played his through a half stack. it is loud enough, and a good mixing engineer can make anything be loud enough and well mixed enough in a mix. the mic might not pick up that much bass though.

the Jim Root terror is amp of the year http://www.orangeamps.com/products/...rror-series/4-jim-root-terror-signature-head/

I note that he uses a 100 watt head. loudness and tonality are two different things. I do not like my valve junior nearly as much as my tv50.

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

My main gigging setup used to be a 1x12 15W combo. It will hold up fine if your band has its "sound" together. If not, you're screwed, and might as well just play air guitar. It's not really venue dependent; it depends on the other members of your band. In other words, if you're gonna play 1x12/15W, your bandmates should not be rolling in their stacks.

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

Okay, cool :)

so I guess it's a go-ahead on the 15w --> 2x12/4x12 ??

I only considered the Micro Terror cause its cheaper (and a hybrid, im perfectly fine with hybrid amps IME), and its 20 watts rather then 15. So I guess the tiny terror/dark terror are better.

In speaking purely of being loud enough, yes. I have a tiny terror. The rhythm guitar player has a 5150, and the bass player has an ampeg sitting on a 4x10 cab. It's loud enough but as mentioned before, it will break up if trying to use it clean but it sounds like you want it dirty. In that case, crank it and let it rip.

Thats exactly what i like to hear :) if I ever use it clean, i'll be using it in my bedroom at low volume.

Micro Terror doing metal ^ I'm pretty much sold on it. Now to find a good sounding cabinet for it :)

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

for shows I recommend a tube amp! depending on whatever type of metal, I do not recommend anything less than 30 watts of tube tone!

ha!

my opinion is mine :)

I play a 60 watt hybrid amp atm, and I love the tone it provides for me. I'm just ready for a new amp :) I have the time and money for it, and I'm convinced on this. The Micro terror is hybrid, so i assume its good. The youtube clips confirm that it does sound sweet ! I'm just gonna go play it myself/mayeb rent it. and check it out for myself !!

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

A tiny terror is a very loud 15 watts, especially if you have efficient speakers in your cab. And they sound great turned up all the way. I use mine with the gain on about 3 and the volume on 7, and use pedals for my OD tones. If you need to rock, turn the volume up to 9-10 and turn the gain up to taste. You'll have crunch, sustain, & hot lead tones. These small amps don't have the low end grunt that the big iron 50 or 100 watt Oranges have, but if you pair it with the right speakers & cab you'll be in good shape. Love my TT.

Which cab/speakers do you suggest ?

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

The issue with using a TT or DT live isnt will it be loud enough its will it have enough headroom. I myself for good high gain tones dont like the sound of a small amp on 10 its too compressed the bottom is fuzzy and indistinct. YMMV but its something to think about.

Re: Orange Micro Terror / Tiny Terror / Dark Terror for shows !?

I have a Micro Terror that I use as a backup amp live incase anything happens to my SLO or Quick Rod and it's more than upto this task.

At gig volume through my oversized 2x12 cab with V30s there is practically zero clean headroom (gain needs to be about halfway up top get the volume) but as I don't really use clean sounds with my band it's not too much of a problem. I also find it to take ODs and Boost pedals well so I can still get some tonal variety from it.

Would I use it as my main gigging/live amp: No. Whilst it sounds good, especially for what it is, it's obviously not upto the tonal standard of my other amps (I don't mean or want to sound like a snob but I can't think of another way to describe it). Would I rely on it to give me a very useable tone live if a valve or something died in my main amp: Yes, most definitely.

EDIT: I've just seen your older thread about a half stack for metal and think that of the 3 amps mentioned here the Dark Terror would probably be your best option gain wise. I agree with the suggestion of 5150/6505 etc as being probably the 'best' amp for the tones you mentioned in the other thread.
