PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

Wanting a P90 guitar to just play around with in the house. Used to have a Tremonti SE and it was the best $500 guitar I ever touched and this one with P90's is good also for $500. Being a LP Studio and Explorer owner though I wonder if the SG classic with p90's would be a better deal at $900. can't find one out here in the sticks to test run. The one dealer around here who I use and trust for everything (and is a gibson dealer) says he can get me one. I would trust them getting the guitar right than buying from one of the on line stores sight unseen , but without playing one I don't know for a knock around guitar if its worth the extra money. Anyone own or have experience with the SG?

I love SG's... IMO, they possess many great attributes you're looking for in a guitar.

I'd definetely go with an SG. But ya know, different strokes....

Edit: BTW I like your avatar, grandpa.

I'm gonna agree with Lex. my guitar teacher had one and the thing just sings. its beautiful. i have a PRS SE double cut p90 (the soapbar IIs) and its just not as good as the one that my teacher has. but neck is also important

Although I am a strong supporter of PRS, and I would consider myself a un-fan of gibson's due to their latest practices....that sg is killer.

Sure the PRS is a great deal, and a great guitar. But for 900$ that SG is the secks!

If you see Pink Unicorn Horsey, ask him about it.

+1. With SG's you get ultimate fret access, light weight, and a sleek, sexy body. Add P-90's and how can you improve on that?

SG all the way.

The SG is much more expensive, at least used.

The PRS SE soapbars are muddy in overdrive and the cavities are too small to fit U.S. made soapbars with cover. That's a real problem since you don't have a pickguard.

On the other hand, the SE gives you flawless build with frets in the right place, whereas the Gibson gives you nitro in some more or less coherent manner.

I just got a PRS SE Soapbar and it's jumped to #1 over my MIA Fender and Guild.

Light and resonant and loud and delicious.

See my video of testing it's clean and crunch tones here

Hope that helps,
Hunter

why can't i find the sg classic p90 on gibson's website?

Re: PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

I have a Gibson SG Classic. Of my six electrics, it's probably my favorite—and those electrics include a Gibson LP and a G&L ASAT, not firewood by any means. I've never played the PRS you're referring to, so I can't draw a true comparison, but I can tell you I absolutely love my SG, and it's one of the few guitars I've owned that I'm content with keeping stock.

Bill, you can't find the SG on their website because they sell exclusively through Musician's Friend and Guitar Center, IIRC.

That clip is really good Immortal. Thanks for the link. Its going to be a tough decision. It would be much simpler if I could find an SG to play. But I ain't drivin 150 miles to nearest GC. Thanks for the info on both guitars guys.

Thanks man!

--- I think if your goal is to have a knock-around-the-house guitar, a play-on-the-couch guitar, the PRS SE is the clear choice. It's cheaper, their fit and finish is top notch, even against USA instruments. Playability is all that matters on an at-home guitar. Also, they're more well balanced than an SG, which is a medium (not quite big) deal when it comes to playing around the house.

If you're wanting to play out, the SG is certainly cooler looking (that's subjective I suppose) and it's got that G-word on the 'stock. Also, a Gibson SG is going to be more valuable over time, and more permanently revered," so to speak. It won't likely go out of style. Not like the very conservatively (and in my opinion, very classy / tastefully) styled PRS's are going to go out of style, but you can be pretty sure an SG has the "staying power."

You said you're a former PRS owner so I'm sure you know how well they play. Gibsons are hit and miss with playability, oddly. Good move deciding to play before you buy.

Probably just a rehash of what you already know, but there's my opinions! They're about worth what you paid for them

P.S. Know where Perryville is?

Re: PRS SE single cut P90 vs. SG classic P90?

Perryville? Sure, I'm about an hour south in New Madrid. Right on the the Big Muddy and fault line. You from around here?
