School Me On Les Paul Juniors and Specials

Re: School Me On Les Paul Juniors and Specials

Be warned that most modern dual-soapbar Special have P-100s in them. Can't fairly evaluate them.

Re: School Me On Les Paul Juniors and Specials

Lets put it this way Einstien. Specials suck okay?

No.

I've had my 59 DC since 1992- it's the guitar I've had the longest.

I only sold the 58 because I needed the money and it got valuable to the point that I was afraid to play it.

Re: School Me On Les Paul Juniors and Specials

not really man

I went to this shop here in town the other day and played lots of Gibsons i couldn't afford - standards & the like, and a few i could afford - a couple v's, like 5 of those new LP studios with the natural finish & what I'm assuming is a maple top, and a single cut special with 2 p90's in that crappy white finish they were making em in for awhile

verdict(s) are as follows

standard was good, but not as good as i thought it should have been

All of the studios were way different (neck shape, weight, sound, etc) despite all being the same model and i only really liked one of them, and that one was kinda iffy, one of those "meh, maybe with different pickups" guitars. A lot of em were waaay too light & had real thin necks on em, i dunno what the hell all that's about....

V's... i made a thread about em so there you go

the only one that really blew me away was the special. It was only like $700 and just had a raw crunchy powerful sound. Really, really good rock & roll guitar. I usually am kinda indifferent about neck p90's and I use the neck pickup a lot so that's been my main deterrent in the past, but this one was great; sounded thick but defined, raunchy, heavy and pianoey which is important to me, just had it all. I've always loved bridge p90's and yeah, that was spot on as well. Other than that it had good fret work, nice medium weight, played real fast, couldn't find any imperfections but given the finish i dunno if i'd even know one if i saw it.

I've played a handful of those PRS soapbars, a few back when i was GASing for a p90 guitar and then a couple more here & there, and man... they just suck. I'm sorry if you like em, if you dig em and think they sound amazing and are a great bargain more power to you, but i dunno man, every time i plug one in it's just disappointing. I dunno how they managed to take the balls out of p90's but somehow they managed. It's also way too light & tiny, feels like a toy

to each his own I guess, and for the record i've never played a p90 standard other than that gold Epiphone reissue so no i don't know what i'm missing there, but when a $700 guitar (em shorts rocks) trumps stuff in the 1-2 grand range, it definitely doesn't suck

Re: School Me On Les Paul Juniors and Specials

Sorry. Specials are okay for guys who've never gotten thier mitts on a Standard. The reason a Standard is called a "standard" is cause its the 'Standard' of Gibson Guitars. That meand carved maple tops, select solid body wood.
The OP has a premium plus Les Paul. It is the standard..and plus ! Would he be happy with a special. No. I stand buy that. Thanks for you earnest response.

I know you've taken a bit of heat for your statements today, but I must agree with the crowd on this one...I have a Les Paul Special Double Cutaway Historic Reissue, and it rocks...it is one of the best guitars I have ever played. I also have an R7 Black Beauty Les Paul Custom reissue, and it rocks (the stock middle humbucker is useless...please replace it with a PhatCat immediately). It is my main guitar because I have modded it to be super versatile with the three pickup situation, not because it is inherently better just because it is a custom versus the special.

One was the budget guitar of its era, the other the cadillac of its era. I love them both. They both play and sound great. One does not feel cheaper than the other, even though one was (slightly) cheaper than the other.

This may sound preachy and pretentious, for which I apologize in advance, but blanket statements about the quality of an individual guitar simply because of its make an model are not super useful. I ended up selling my 2006 American Strat because I liked my mid '80's Squier strat better, even though we all know that Squiers are supposed to suck, right?

Jerry talks out the side of his neck and then falls down in a big ole pile of crap alot. I wouldn't listen to too much he says unless it involves prostitutes.

You truly have no idea...

This is fine, saves Jr's and Specials for guitars players that know whats going on!

Re: School Me On Les Paul Juniors and Specials

UHH oh... Jolly..Golden boy. TGWIF...ughhhh.. MMMkay...

:outahere:

( but is it okay to place the Juniour way above the Special??) Leslie West played a Junior. I never badmouthed the Juniour.
Who(besides blues players) ever played a Special ??

Ain't but ONE serious tool in this here thread, Brother Jerry. Three guesses who it is, and the first two don't count.

+1. I love the elegance of LP & SG Customs, & 355's, but there's also something very appealing about a LP Special, or an SG Special. Maybe it's the P-90's, or the stripped-down-to-the-basics feel, but sometimes they're just what you want. A lower price doesn't necessarily mean you're giving up anything in sound quality. I wouldn't turn down a guitar that had a nice "raw crunchy powerful sound" just because it didn't cost enough.

Besides, what would you rather take to a low-paying gig in a questionable neighborhood late at night, a Std or Special?

Re: School Me On Les Paul Juniors and Specials

P-90's are for RAWK. Don't worry about the wood.

i'd have to agree

tied with first is my duo-sonic tied with my LP epi jr from the 90s

it has a lollar p90 in the bridge, CTS pots, switchcraft switch and semi-intonatable bridge. it sounds as good as a vintage parts guitar.

anyone that says that wood makes a huge difference in sound for an electric needs to get the car keys out of their ears.

Wood has a huge impact on sound, but expensive wood doesn't mean it has a better tone for electric guitars. Expensive woods are graded on grain and cosmetics, not tonal qualities. Cheaper woods may look plain, but can sound as good, or better than the higher-priced pieces. Spending more doesn't always get you more.

thats kind of what i meant....but not really. it'd be a good general edit. i think that the type of wood makes a huge difference....obviously. but the quality of wood is overrated....yea

Re: School Me On Les Paul Juniors and Specials

This is my next project, just waiting for it to be shipped from the US.

It will have all Schaller hardware, locking tuners, roller bridge and fine tune TP.
Pickups are SM-3's mini humbuckers with the Jimmy Page wiring.

I don't how I'll get along with the neck, but if necessary I'll shave it if it's
too clubby, and if so probably refinish it all. Would it devalue? it's a 2006
