Dunlop!!

On my first guitar at a gig, my strap broke before the straplock even thought about releasing. I don't beat up my guitars nearly as bad these days.

Bollocks. Schallers are bulky. Which is why I don't use them on double-cut guitars.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

Dunlops are slightly bulkier IMO, but that is more than made up for by the fact that they don't drop my guitars.

I think a product where you have to constantly qualify your praise of it with "installed correctly and regularly checked" isn't that great. I do give my dunlops a tug as I put the guitar on, but a tug won't tell you if a schaller lock has worked its way round to being upside down. And if the nut gets really loose, which it will over time, then that can happen in a few minutes over the course of a gig.

I actually think the outright best ones are the DiMarzio ClipLock straps. It's just that there are aesthetic concerns there. But they use parachute clips, and seatbelt material, both of which are trusted with people's lives every day. I have one on my 80s strat, because they're aesthetically perfect with that guitar.

Isn't it peculiar that a number of well known guitar players don't even use strap locks?

Right, so if there was a brand of tires or condoms that needed less checking to be safe, that'd probably be the one you'd use.

Also, what? Huge TVs? I've got one of those, it's on a stand, and we turn it on when we want to use it and off when we don't. Not sure what checking we should be doing there.

They're probably smart enough to match the strap to the guitar, the strap ends to the buttons, and not fling the thing around like a nut case.

I however, am not, and that's why I like strap locks.

I notice Steve Vai doesn't use one, at least not one that I recognize (Dunlop and Schaller), and he swings and bangs the hell out of his guitar like crazy and never drop it.

Some also don't use pics, or amplifiers, or tremelo, and .......

You get the point. I don't fling my guitar around. I just like strap locks because

a) I know my guitar is secure

b) It's easier to get the strap on and off without wearing out the ends and having to buy a new one.

huge TVs on walls is what I meant. it's not something you check all the time but I'm sure upon installation you made sure the thing was right on there.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

I own both on two Les Pauls. The schallers are really a hassle. The dunlops are perfect, and i like that their screws go deeper for a more secure fit. My schallers have dropped my guitar a few times at gigs. Never happened to me dunlops.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

For me schaller and Dimarzio straplock...

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

I've used Dunlop straplocks for decades and once they are installed properly, they are unbeatable.

The only hangup with Dunlops is that their screwheads should be case hardened because they are so tiny. If you don't get it JUST right, it can be very tough.

ALSO...their screws bite DEEEEEEEEEP so it can be a pain if you don't have a drill.

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

Certain straps dont work properly with the schaller straplocks. The dunlops work with all. However for transport the dunlops are more of a pain in the back, compared to the schallers which make easy tasks of taking off the strap. As far as holding goes, I've got them both and neither has failed me. Although I must say I dislike a straplock on the upper pin, it limits manoueverablity, more so on the schaller than the dunlop. I use a full dunlop set on my Charvel and a full schaller set on my Viper, the Vipers lay-out makes friction on the schallers impossible. My LP just uses the bottom schaller and rubber washer on top, tight as F really!

schallers for me, because they stick out less than the dunlops. for some reason, dunlop always gives me stability issues and schallers don't. I don't mind torquing down the schallers a bit. but I use locktite for most of my 'nuts' so why not on the straplocks?

Re: Straplocks: Dunlop VS. Schaller

Schaller for me. I don't like the Dunlop straplock's design. I'm not saying it's poorly designed, but it just doesn't feel right for me. Schaller just feels more solid as well.
