This brings me back to my first guitar a Kay SG copy that came with a pitch pipe, I used that dang thing for about a year before I trained my self to vocally say EEEEEEEE out loud actually to the correct pitch of E . Then I would tune from there with harmonics, as I saw a friend doing. The one day I bought a "Banana Electronic Guitar Tuner" thing had a actual VU meter in it as did the Casio tuner I replaced it with years later. Nowadays I keep a clip on handy, but usually play thru plugins and just use a VST tuner.

I totally remember the Banana tuners! I just had a tuning fork.

I haven't used this method in years (the 5th 7th fret harmonics, then adjust is really ingrained when not onstage), but I always liked using 12th fret harmonic compared to the fretted 7th on the next string.
