Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

I know everyone likes their humbuckers, but really? Do we need another humbucker pickup? There are SO many out there. I really think a great telecaster bridge pickup is in order! <campaigning mode |on|>

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

I don't think a minor finetuning filling in the hotter PAF/cooler Custom region is likely to have a big following. Brobucker and Custom/'59 have been done. And '78, for that matter.

There are a lot of people who like PAFs and overwound PAFs, but getting them all to agree on the same niche is tough, and doesn't seem likely to produce something that fills a major hole in Seymour Duncan's pickup lineup. They've got a lot of variations on that theme already.

I could see the argument for a neck pickup match for the C/59, though. Not my personal interest, but a good niche to fill. Would likely help with 24 fret guitars with problematic neck humbucker slots...

Tele lineup could use some new entries. But I don't have a tele yet...

I'd love a Five-Two Stack Plus (flat or maybe curved to match 12" neck radius?), but doubt the demand is there either.

Probably a good demand for more SC-sized HBs, but it'd have to fill a different niche than current models (or seriously blow them away).

Staple's been done, though I regret missing it...

I'd love to see some more interesting humbucker designs. A8 with metal rails and dual resonance coils, maybe? Or an A2 magnet-as-blade, (perhaps wound to sound SCish when split), paired with a screw coil with an SC-sized ceramic bar, again possibly dual resonance (yes, those patents have long expired).

No idea which way to vote. *ponder*

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

I'm for a unpotted, SethN/JazzN hybrid, wound in butyrate bobbins with an A2 mag.

The Seth coil wound with PE, the Jazz coil with Spn, each with its particular wind pattern. This could turn into the ultimate neck p'up, at least spec-wise. Matched with a unpotted, butyrate bobbin SethB/Custom with an A2, for the ultimate all'rounder set.

Or a non-reliced, 4 conductor, short-legged Antiquity/Seth set with fully-charged A2 mags. The slug bobbins should be the Seths in both cases. The "both-on" position tone should be to die for!

One can dream... ;)

Blade pups like CJ Pierce Custom set
really would like a super beefy p90 with alnico.
A neck humbucker hybrid to go with the 59/custom
i think these would sell. the blade thing has come up before, and the idea tends to make people squirm quite moistly.
Son Of StratBro90, in a calibrated set of three, with a selection of user-interchangable bar magnets.
did the stratbro get much hype when it was done? whenever people hear about it they seem to like the idea

If I'm not mistaken, the Diablo style pickups, the blades are the magnets and they are Alnico 2
that's my understanding... i hope that's right!

vintage style P90 in a humbucker size. I know we have Phat Cats, and I love mine, but w/A2's they don't sound a lot like old P90's
i agree, and would add quarter-pound-style poles to the mix.

this is all very interesting!!

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

HOW...ever, since this is a one off pickup, does anybody wanna talk filtertrons or toasters in HB spacing? Those surely are unique and never been done before. Am I crazy for thinking making your LPs and hss strats sound close to Gretsche or Rickenbacker would be exclusive? I'm backing the toasters also.

Tone bribe:

I meant "Alnico" not as in the alloy (which is not capitalized), but as in the name of the Gibson pickup used in the neck slot of the first few years of LP Customs (and some other Gibsons too).

This baby right here (the soapbar variety):

Unfortunately, it is Custom Shop, and costs $225.

:scratchch, I like the way you think.

These would all be cool IMO.

I agree.

Although even before the poll was put up, I anticipated a win by humbuckers. They're just more common pickups.

I'd like to see something new and original. I'm all for a good pickup, but most of the good ideas for regular pups are taken. Do we really need another regular humbucker wound to 10k with a particular magnet? I know we're limited by both our personal expertise and the amount of R&D that we can reasonably ask SD to do, but it would be cool if we could figure out something really special. Not just your idea of what mish-mash combination of specs would make your ideal humbucker tone, or another hybrid.

Having said that, I don't have any particularly exciting ideas to offer up. I like the Phat Staple because it's out of the ordinary. I like the idea of 'bucker-sized 'Trons or toasters because the market isn't already saturated with every possible spec sheet under the sun.

I also like the idea of the Klein Tri-State I just picked up. It's a Tele bridge pup with two taps, giving you a possibility of three different output levels and tones. Granted, I've only got it partially wired up, but the sounds so far are superb and it's immensely versatile.

Something like that would be really cool. A nice thick and fat sounding single coil (for Tele or Strat) that can be tapped to get a good mid-strength tone AND a weaker, more vintage tone. Something like that could work well with a humbucker or P90 too.

^^ That's more or less where I'm at too. Whilst I'd love something like a new Jazzmaster style option, why not work on something we can't do ourselves? As interesting as they maybe, most hybrids and mag swap stuff could be constructed by the guys for themselves. But the filtertron, tv jones, tapped Tele bridge and some of the other more esoteric options are going to take more resources than most of us have to hand - i.e. just the sort of thing the SD Custom Shop could do. We need their heart in it too. For that matter, maybe they could throw in some ideas - perhaps there's something they've got something they'd like to try but not been too sure whether there's an audience for - it would still be our choice, but there may well be possibilities we haven't considered.

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

Seymour Duncan has so many bridge humbuckers! I think it is time for a new neck humbucker.

:approve:

Filtertrons in humbucker housings!

'59s in P90 sized housings (hello Gibson tribute series)!

Tele bridge pickup sized P90!

I would buy all 3 of those!

Dude...I think I'd be down for either of those, especially the...

I don't know. Actually, I want both. I would buy both.

These are all great ideas.

Also..

Charlie Christian pickup that fits down into a humbucker route.

P90 for the Tele bridge. Yes.

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

It'd be nice to own a User Group pickup, but I only want humbuckers and I already love the ones I have like the Custom,Distortion, JB etc so I'm not really sure what to suggest.
