Re: What category does your gear fit under? How do you keep it?

Well, I'm like this.

The body, I don't care as long as it's in one piece. Obviously I don't intentionally damage it, but I hardly wear white gloves  My first Gordon Smith has plenty of dints here and there, and I don't mind. The guitar works, and I'm not going to be selling it anyway.

Strings, I don't sweat much so they stay clean... I'm a bit wary of which friends play which guitars; I won't let certain friends play guitars with newer strings on because I know they'll kill them because of their hand sweat.

Headstock: again, I'm not too bothered about dints here and there.

Neck : very bothered. Since this is where my hands are going, I like it to be nice and clean. I make sure this gets no dents whatsoever. All of my necks are in pristine condition, and the fretboards are nice and clean as well.

I'm always very careful when playing someone elses guitar, just out of respect/not wanting to get beat up for breaking something.

However, with my own, sooner or later all that will be left will be the necks :laugh2:

So "road warrior" for me :)

i said careful enough ... but it kinda depends ... my PRS gets the baby treatment ... i only wear an oversized sweatshirt when playing it so there is no chance of shirtbuttons, belt buckle, etc scratching her ...

until i take the sawzall to the heel, that is :D

as for all my others, i keep them all in hardshell cases when i am not playing and only transport them in hardshell cases as well ... i have a gig bag that is 'ok', but i just cant bring myself to put a guitar in the car with only that for protection ... i let other musicians use them in my presence without hesitation ... i wipe em down when i'm done playing, but i dont clean them obsessively ... they each have a few little dings, but nothing through the finish except a coupla headstock bruises ...

Hardcore Roadwarrior

Though, I'm a mix of a couple of those catagories.

I own three guitars and one case (which I only use for long trips). I've tossed my Strats into the back of pickups, car trunks, and the tool bins on work trucks. The Les Paul gets a little better treatment as it gets to ride on the cab floor leaning against the passenger seat. Anyone can play my guitars, provided they show a little respect for them.

I don't go out of my way to damage my guitars, but I don't worry about it when it happens either. I only clean them every month or so, but they're otherwise well maintained/setup. I also don't like to let my belt buckle rub the back, so I either take it off, or turn it to the side.

I take great care to protect my amps, and I don't really like people I don't trust touching the knobs, my pedals on the other hand I treat like my guitars.....taken care of, but still ridden hard and put away wet.

I don't really baby my guitars, well guitar. Its a 57 RI les paul and its super clean now because its new but I can't wait until another 10-15 years when it'll be worn and aged. I won't do anything to purposefully harm it but I'm really only conerned about theft and nothing else really.

None of the choices fit me. My gear is in near mint condition, but I will allow others to use it. Granted, I don't hand it over to abusers (that would be poor stewardship), but I am not possessive of it. I keep it in the case/gigbag, wipe the instruments down after I play them, etc.

Example: I bought the POD xt Live last month. I have played it in church twice. Another guitarist was interested in borrowing it to see if he wanted one. Sunday I offered to let him take it home for a couple of days (he didn't, but for different reasons). As long as it's cared for, it's not mine to begin with; I'm just the caretaker (but that's another story).

I'm "careful enough" with my gear. My guitars do have tiny scratches and now I try to keep them ding free (I get one or two here or there). I usually keep everything right in the cases and make sure they're decently polished and that the fretboard isn't dry. After having one or two guitars in the past with small dings on the back of the neck, I'm particularly anal about keeping 'em flawless ;)

I would only let Colz10 (one of my band's guitarrists), my dad (fellow musician on bass and helped fund THE deluxe american strat), my other guitarrist, and this senior at my HS that plays incredible sounding jazz, blues and reggae stuff on guitar-it's a blessing to have my strat played by the great Danny Pereira. I'd probably let my #1 drummer Erick play it if he wanted to since he's always down to business with everything, responsible, and respectful of my gear. All of these people have dry smooth hands that won't tarnish the crap out of my strings.

Anybody else can't touch my gear....ever.....ever...period. Especially my technically fired #2 band drummer Ferdie (the one that pretty much destroyed my peavey classic by unplugging the speaker cables and turning it on for 10 minutes, i insisted on doing everything myself but he kept on insisting that he wanted to help me out with my gear.....jackass....) He has horrifically sweaty hands...even in a cold dry room. I let him play it once on new strings and they all tarnished!

Depends on the piece. I'm touring perfectionist about my amps and PRS, but my fenders are more 'road warrior'.

For some reason, my tele is near mint, though it's more to do with it have a very robust finish than anything else. My strats are undergoing natural relicing.

I guess my pedals fit under 'road warrior', seeing as my Classic OD recently drank 200ml of Heineken.

I'm a clean freak when it comes to my car and my guitars. My room, not the case. I wipe them down after most every time I play them and usually use the Gibson polish after every 4 times of playing. I just can't stand fingerprints and the gunk on them. I like relicied guitars, but I do not like dings, if I bought it new the longer it can look new the better!
