What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

I use the 100's to iron my pants. Nothing sounds better than a good crisp seam on a set of levi's blowin in 4 12 wind.

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

Hundred-watters have more tubes, and more tubes equals more Genuine Tube Tone!

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

I almost added the™. LOL, I always thought the word “genuine” in conjunction with a product containing tube(s) just reeked of desperation.

Did you copypasta that from The Gear Page?

"Hi. I play in my bedroom at a volume so low my wife can sleep. Is an original Dumble the right amp for me?"

I did not. But since we’re on this, I play in my bedroom at a volume so low my neighbor couldn’t hear it if she were in my lap holding the guitar for me. Forty- and hundred-watt tube amps were practically made for me, dontcha think?

On that note, my wife complained about me playing unplugged a few weeks ago while our daughter was napping. I was like, "You're kidding, right?". LOL

FYI, for those that have 100 watt heads, play at home, AND record: http://www.two-notes.com/en/torpedo-captor

There's a 20dB attenuator in there. :)

My wife is a saint...
Every night after work I sit in my chair while she watches tv and I put the metronome on and practice (unplugged). She never complains.
Clack...clack....clack.....clack....

Ah! While this is quite accurate and extremely funny, I can recall about a million posts on this here very forum that goes along those lines:

OP: "Hi, I play in an appartment with very sensitive Neighbors and need a good practice amp."

SDUGF Member (2-3 at least): "Well, an all-tube 20w fender will do the job perfectly"

We're quite guilty of the same thing from time to time...

Well, even a Fender Twin for those purposes would still be more sensible than a Dumble. :p

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

Sure... In the sense that it's identical in the "overkill" aspect (imho st some point too much is just too much, by how much it is just doesn't matter anymore) but much more reasonable in the price department so the dollar to excess ratio is lower with the fender right?? :D

Re: What's the point in big 100 watt heads?

My question is not so much cranking up a high wattage amp but even at normal volumes how do people use a plexi say. I mean I have set my amp to 15 Watt mode and even clean it gets up to about 103db which is ear damage pretty quickly. 100 Watt thereotically adds at least another 9db maybe 12db and make it a full stack and that increases. So are you really running your amps at 115db +? And for what purpose? Mics exist for a reason. Totally understand headroom on something like a revv generator but most people run them with the power amp barely breathing.

Keep in mind that Plexi's traditionally used less efficient speakers. While a lot of modern small amps are being pumped through Vintage 30s (with sensitivities up around 100dB), a Plexi would typically go through Greenbacks (which were down around 96dB).

Also, keep in mind that every time you add a speaker you reduce the amount of power going to each speaker. So in a 100w 1x12 all 100w is being fed to a single speaker, whereas in a fullstack each speaker would only be getting 12.5 watts. Fullstacks are louder than half stacks, but it's not as significant as you'd think it would be.

A lot of people use g12h30 and g12-65s as well as v30s all that are close to 100db but I do see your point.
