Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

Rule #1: Never use science to learn about women.

If you do, you'll either:

1) become a misanthropic computer hacker

2) live in mom's basement until you're 50

...or both.

3)

How about we bring this discussion back on topic, please?

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

Was it ever on topic:?:

Drex, which diagnosis were you given that led to your current position?

Aside: I know you are correct because you cited the esteemed scientific journal "The LA Times" to prove your point.

We have a perfect example above as to how women are different from men in ways that support the proposed guitar features from a few pages back.

Just saw these girls last night. They're called Pink Fur. Drummer is 11, guitarist is 12, bass player/keys/lead singer is 13. They were pretty dang cool. Gives me hope you know?

The point of all that is to demonstrate why this thread so quickly turns sexist, and why that was inevitable, because not a lot is provably known about what makes men and women mentally different to begin with, and yet the question as asked requires that to be a known thing. The reasons why people choose to play guitar are not gender specific, but owe to personality traits that can be observed in either gender. It's probably more productive to frame the question "how do we get anyone of any gender with personality traits X, or interests in Y, to view electric guitar as a worthwhile investment?"

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

Can you give examples of affirming the consequent in physics?

Here's a general one. Remember that Einstein proved that gravity bends light via a solar eclipse because Venus appeared within the blacked out sun despite being on the other side of it (meaning it should be impossible to see Venus at all)?

"If gravity bends light, then we will see Venus within the sphere of the sun despite it being on the other side. We see Venus within the sphere of the sun despite it being in the other side of it, therefore gravity bends light."

That's like saying, "If its raining, then it is cloudy. It is cloudy, therefore it is training.". You can't prove the antecedent of a conditional BG affirming its consequent.

I think the big problem, Evan, is we are asking the wrong question to the wrong group of people. We need to be asking the question to women. Both women who play and women who don't. And we need to ask the men who play what their motivation to learn was. I believe that piece of information is part of the puzzle as it may clash with the motivation(s) that women have.

I kinda feel like we are asking a pack of dogs why their masters ask them to roll over or play dead.

I see the confusion on this now.

Einstein didn't prove that gravity bends light via observation of a solar eclipse. The fact that Venus appeared just lent credibility to his theory of relativity (as lensing was predicted by this theory). The theory of relativity isn't conclusively proven yet, but it's currently the best fitting explanation for predicting how light travels great distances.

It's entirely possible that there's another explanation for how light is bending, for now we use the one that best fits our understanding. The theory of relativity also fits the observations we've made of time dilation and spin procession. Nobody has said it's 'proven' though . . . that's why we keep testing it. There's no affirmation of consequences because the 'affirmation' part has yet to be conclusively made.

No, I see the confusion now... is this a guitar forum or a physics forum? Answer: guitar forum. So, all discussion of physics should be related to the guitar in the guitar shop. All other topics can be discussed in the sound room.

Other confusion? Is this a thread asking for physics explanations from amateurs? No. It's a thread asking why more women do not play guitar. My girl is a physicist, so is her sister. Their father is a physics professor. They can explain things like the "god particle" and the science behind the Hadron Collider (which they have even been underground with!). If we want to have a physics conversation I could invite their wealth of knowledge into the conversation and they will even give you a lecture on it (in Greek even, the mother of language). We'll see how snooty you sound then. Until then, let's get back on topic.

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

If I see the word science one more time...

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

My whole point is that getting hung up on technicalities gets us nowhere.

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

In physics our understanding of the universe has changed over time due to observations. Our physics books have been up blah blah woof woof

I know its off topic but ill answer and keep it brief and succinct.

Of course you pick physics as your example. The one discipline that is the most hard defined. Simply put not everything is so black and white. Stop trying to hold everything to the same standard cause they dont meet it., there have been times in the past that things have shifted in other disciplines due to popular opinion.

Even your own discipline (though I would never accuse you of being a scientist) of engineering recently was befuddled. Another day another time ill tell you about the symposium I attended that discussed how the current engineering models and theories said it was impossible for top fuel dragsters to achieve the speeds they were going. *hint* they dont have an answer just a few theories were preferred.

anyways back on topic

Actually, no. You missed the point entirely. Tell you what. Why don't you go re-read The Divine Comedy in it's original Italian, eh Mosby?

I totally agree with you. I wish we could get more female perspective in this thread.

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

You know what this thread makes me think of? That scene in Good Will Hunting when hes in the Harvard bar and him and the chomer start spouting off about the economy of pre revolutionary war america. All so they could get a girls attention and neither of them knew a damn thing about women...

If you're going to play the "off topic" card, you have to call out the first person to go fully off topic , not whoever it is you happen to disagree with at any given moment. That's just dishonest.

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

As we hurtle towards page #33 and post #666, I wish to play Devil's Advocate by asking the bleedin' obvious question,

have any female forum members posted in this thread yet? :scratchch
