greenbacks/marshall 1960

Anybody switch the g12t75 out for greens? Are they smoother? looking for a smoother less bright compressed sound. Thinking about switching two out.

Re: greenbacks/marshall 1960

GB's are smoother and less bright on top than 75's, after they are broke in. 75's have a razer sharp treble. Their treble annoys me way more than a V30's top. GB's have less bottom end but the left over 75's will probably make up for that. I'd put the GB's up top and the 75's in the bottom, or all GB's.

Re: greenbacks/marshall 1960

I've got all Greenbacks in both of my 1960a cabinets......I'm happy! Very smooth with nice breakup.

I did try the GB's with 75's and it sounded really nice too but when I had a chance to play a quad of Greenies I was sold!

Re: greenbacks/marshall 1960

Anyone ever try Greenbacks mixed with Vintage 30's?

I live there every day! Definitely my favourite combination hands down.

You can either use the G12m - 25 or the G12H - 30 for this speaker combination. (G12H is more sensitive and it has tighter lows) Basically, it is a great combination if you need something with less breakup than a quartet of greenbacks but you want something less constipated than a quartet of v30s. They also add thickness to the tone overall, with a nice bite and roar as well as the cream. Just one note, v30s are a more sensitive speaker so you won't be able to crank your amp up as much. Consider this when attempting this speaker combination.

G12T - 75s sound scooped and scratchy to my ears. I always thought I hated Marshall heads until I realized that it was the speakers I hated.

like having a new amp huh
Speakers are as important as the amp or the guitar you are playing.

Check on Craigslist, ebay, etc for used speakers in your area. I picked up a used G12m - 25 (greenback) and a V30, $150 for the pair when I was in Vancouver for school. I then surfed over to Mojotone and to BLT sound and now I have all the hardware to build another 2 x 12 ^_____________^.

Here is the last build project.

Although you have to check for signs of abuse, buying used will allow you to maximize your cash investment and everyone knows that broken in speakers sound much better. You could feasibly replace four speakers for $300 if you shop carefully and it should be easy to sell the G12T - 75s at least for $150 - $200. $250 is also fair AND possible.

http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=46143 Here are some v30s on sale provided you want to try the speaker combination. I, for one, absolutely love v30s combined with Greenbacks and I swear by that combo.

To me, a quad of Greenbacks is THE combo for my favorite vintage Marshall sound... I just wish they had more headroom.

How do yours sound with your Bogner Ecstasy?

OP: sorry for the hijack. ;D I think the G12T75's sound best with dark, loud amps. They're not as efficient volume wise and the added treble helps the definition of a darker amp. Personally I like the Eminence Man-O-Wars better for that kind of sound; they're smoother, bassier, and louder.

Re: greenbacks/marshall 1960

im not sure what green to go with g12 h or M , I like VH to 80's metal

When you push the G12m with a lot of power (think 100watt Dual) the low end can start to fart out. As far as I recall, G12Hs are louder, tighter, and have more thump. Hendrix used a 4 x 12 with these guys. If you are doing VH to 80s metal a G12H / V30 combo might be better. It will give you the warmth and crunch for lower gain settings but will retain clarity better when the gain is turned up.
Also, look into the Classic Lead 80. These speakers are the quintessential 80s metal tone with their huge mid scoop. My advice, go to the Celestion site and listen through their demos. They are interesting, to say the least, even if they are unscientific.

I do worry about the power handling though. I've always used my amp in the 50 watt mode so I should be OK even though I tend to play stupidly loud!

Seriously though, I went through a speaker phase. I bought Vintage 30's, G12H-30's, Greenbacks, G12T-75's and CL-80's and tried every possible combination. I liked many but ended up most happy with the quads of Greenbacks!

Re: greenbacks/marshall 1960

Bogners "Flamethrower" Super high gain Cabinet ,and Ive heard Bogner makes the absolute best sounding cabinets, is loaded with 4x GT-75's.
From what Ive heard, the GT-75's can be mixed with an Emi legend V-12 to fill out the sound.
Bogners 1x12 is loaded with a Celestion Classic lead 80. Ive heard very good things about the G12-100 ( which is also the old G12-85) being a great Nu Metalcabinet.
The safe bet is nopw a 4x12 G12H30/ V30 mix cabinet.

See, I'd be fine with using my amp in 50w mode except when I do I have trouble getting enough clean headroom over my drummer. :D

I wonder how close those Emi Legend GB12's are to Greenbacks? I tend to like Emis more these days anyways.

Re: greenbacks/marshall 1960

^^ The G12-65 is close to a G12M GB but has less breakup. It may be a bit darker and even a bit smoother.

For what it's worth EVH says he has always prefered and used G12M GB's. Specifically the G12M20. The new EVH G12M is the Heritage G12M20 (It still handles 25) with stripes. The G12M's bottom end is okay in closed back cabs. I can get enough "thump" for me from my 4x12 when loaded with G12M's.

I personally like the G12H30 best for overall versatile playing. The G12M has a certain bluesy creaminess for overdriven guitar that is unique though. I like to load my 4x12 up with G12M GB's if using it with a KT66 loaded JTM45 for a gig or recording, just because the G12M helps cope with the typical very heavy bass, and extra glassy treble, properties of a KT66 loaded JTM45. The G12M GB also gives my EL34 Jubilees a more creamy distortion, but the cleans arn't quite as glassy.

The V30 or a V30 mix work fairly well with channel switching cleans, because of their more chimey upper mids. A G12T75 mix may do so as well?

Re: greenbacks/marshall 1960

I liked the EVH for one reason it sounded smooth, and the Marshall for its sparkle. Once I get some speakers in there i should be good

Re: greenbacks/marshall 1960

I recently scored a quad of those g12-65s on craigslist for $150 bucks... I sold 2 for 250 bucks and kept 2 for a bluesbreaker style 2x12 to compliment my earcandy with green machines...

BUY USED LOL
