Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

I guess it would be a decent beginners stack. I wasn't crazy about it and i think if you look you could find a lot more for the money. I think the issue you you might run into is cutting through at higher volumes. I played with a band last week and both guitars had a marshall MG half stack and they eventually had to mic the cabs to be heard over the drummer and bass because they could not cut through a live mix. and this was a bar who's was max occupancy 80. It's something you should consider. I think if you checked a couple amps at local shops you can get a used tube amp for the same money. I just feel the MG's are amps people grow out of quickley.

Also what kind of punk do you mean? Blink 182 type of sound?

god no!! more like Rancid,Bad religion, old Greenday Pennywise.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

The MG Halfstack at BB is (by my rough inspection) around $600

for that you could get a 5150 2x12 Combo, a Traynor combo, certain Mesa Combo's, Old JCM 800/900 Combo's or Heads.

Not as bad @$$ed looking as a half stack, but it will definately sound better. Additionally, the 4X12 cab for the MG series is utter crap.

If it were me, I'd pickup a Traynor EL34 based Combo and a DS-1

Ok. So it's a pretty standard punk sound then, I know rancid and fletcher from PW swear by Mesa Duals but you're probably not finding one of those for $600 buck, but also you don't need to. As mentioned a 6505+ Combo has more then enough gain on tap and can get you into that chunky palm mutes of PW, IF that's what you're looking for. Plus you could always add an extension cab to it. That's 600 bucks new. You don't NEED a H/S as stated but if you really like this MG thing then go for it. I've just seen people love these amps the first week then they're ready to upgrade.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

You came here for congratulations, and I'll give it. I hope you enjoy your new amp! If it doesn't work for you, then feel free to come ask for more advice.

Fender blues deluxe, Peavey Windsor, Traynor amps, etc..... those all rock in that range.

If you love it, then love it and enjoy it!

True. If you are happy, that is all that counts.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

If you like it, great. The problem is those things have no resale value and, chances are, you're gonna outgrow it quick. Not to mention that it's overpriced for what it is. You can do much better on the used market, ESPECIALLY on the cab. MG cabs are undersized MDF crap. You should be able to find something like a Peavey Windsor and a Peavey MS12 cab for less than $600 without much effort and it will last you longer and you'll still be able to sell it when you're ready to upgrade.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

I know you wanted to hear how it's cool and congratulations like everyone has done now but really 600 bucks for something that won't sound good, isn't really good quality and that doesn't have much resale value?
I think you would be much happier with some advice: for that money you can get something much better. Have you even tried out other amps? Just because it's punk doesn't mean it has to be bad? Those punkbands you mentioned don't play marshall mg's, they all play real tube marshalls or mesa's...
I hope you will take this the right way and rethink your options.

I thought punk was all about cranking up an amp and not caring what it sounded like.

But you listen to '80s metal. Which is all about perming your hair, pouting and shoving socks down your pants, right? :p

Anyway, yeah, some punk dudes have bad tone and some punk dudes have bad tone and don't care but I'm assuming that, since the OP is on a pickup company's forum, he IS going to care about his tone.

And anyway, it's not just the sound. As others have mentioned, amps like this have trouble cutting through a mix with clarity. Which does matter, even if you're playing punk. They're not known for being exceptionally reliable and I don't think that the head or the cardboard cab would stand up to a lot of rough treatment travelling to and from gigs, which possibly matters more for punk than a lot of other genres. If you want to generalise, that is. ;)

An MG, if you are serious, go for it. Solid state, been there several times often due to budget limitations and left them with many mixed emotions.

Please realize that once the honeymoon is over, you might be wanting more.

Maybe you'll think the head is good but you need new speakers. As Helloween stated many years, "The Chase is On."

The BB in my area selld Vox, Marshall, Line-6, Fender and Peavy. You might be better off with a Nighttrain and a cabinet than a MG. By all means look at used gear.

Please, if at all possible try as many different amps as possible in your price range. let your ears do be your guide.

+1 on something used, even if it's the SS. let some other sap dish out the full price. reap the rewards when he gases for something else.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

Unless you're 16, have only been playing 2-3 years, or are strapped for cash and ONLY want to buy new, you're making a huge mistake.

Actually, those are all just justifications - you're making a mistake no matter what.
