Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

I listen to everything from Elvis to Mario Lanza.

I didn't say that you exclusively listen to '80s metal. ;)

I listen to everything from Sunn-o))) to Nas to Bach to Bob Dylan to Prodigy to Guns and Roses to Steve Earle.

Didn't mean any offence or argument, dude. I just felt that that comment called for a friendly rebuttal. :beerchug:

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

I thought punk was all about cranking up an amp and not caring what it sounded like.

hehe, you know, that has sometimes been a serious school of thought among some. I remember punk bands going on w/crap Peavey ss 1x12 combo amps, thinking that they were redefining something or other (their words)...then the band I was in would play after, and my Hiwatt pretty much put all that to rest...

malymal86, get the best amp that you can afford, and rock!

+1 on a Peavey Windsor.

If you get one used, it WILL cut through, and you'll have enough dough left over for a cool OD box or two.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

If you can afford 600, you can wait a few weeks or whatever and make it 800 and buy a REAL Marshall half (DSL's I see in this price range) on the used market.

+1. when I was convinced I needed 50W, i got the DSL, and I'll be damned if it didn't do Bad Religion all day. That's almost half of what I loved it for. And I did love the amp, but it was too loud.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

I have said it before and I will say it again... those Marshall MG series doesn't sound so bad when you connect them to a proper cab. (take it with a grain of salt here)

hey dude, take the MG100 and punk on.

edit: this video teach you how to play punk, and as far as I can see he's playing an Epi with a Marshall MG and it sounds like punk... simple and nasty.

Being punk means doing what you do no matter what someone tries to push upon you. So if that means you wanna play punk on great gear, don't let anyone tell you no. If you're sure there's nothing out there in your price range that wows you more than an MG, get the MG.

But trust me... trust me... you'll like to listen to yourself play a LOT more if you get a decent tube amp. Simple and nasty but with rich overtones and touch-sensitive punch beats straight up simple and nasty.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

I recently jammed with a band who's guitarists used a Marshall MG. It's noisy (bad feedback and not the good kind either). He had that sucker cranked to try to be heard over drums, I had my DSL on 2 and still louder than him.

The MG is no better thna the VYper you had.

Trust us, when looking for you need to take into consideration the following;

Bedroom jam or live jam?

If you have the potential to jam with others either via practice or a gig, you need a dependable amp that has the capabilities to play out live.

1 year plan or 5 year plan?

Will this amp be the same amp you still plan on playing five years down the road. Let's face it, taste and tone will change. You're punk now, but who's to say 2 years down the road you join a metal band or a pop band. You need an amp that can cover whatever direction you are heading. I went from a pop rock band to 90s rock to alternative modern rock to hard rock all with my DSL.

Do you have a job or a source of income?

If so, there are stores that will let you finance gear.

I come to this forum to talk tone, gear and get advice. We may not always agree with each other, but there will always be good perspective. If you listen to anything listen to this, over the last 3 years I went through more amps than any man should. I'm always on the quest for my epic tone. Moral of story, if you spend money on mediocre quality gear, your tone is mediocre. Invest on something great, then you will strive to be great.

Would you rather have 5 amps that sound average or 1 amp that is amazing. That's what will happen if you get the MG. You start with the MG, then sell it to get something else, then something else, then something else, ........... till finally you just man up, spend some cash or buy used and get a Marshall (any JCM series) Mesa (any) Peavey (JSX, XXX, 5150) etc

Do yourself a favor and check out craigslist.org

dood i live on craig's even if im not shopping for gear. but when im spending this kind of money on an amp im gonna buy new.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

the moral of the story is:
buy a tube amp and you will become a better guitarist, even if you don't practice at all. tone is in the gear.

Re: New Marshall mgfx 100w head and cab!!!!!!!!

Fender blues deluxe, Peavey Windsor, ...

wow I did'nt see this one before and I do like peavy amps too I've had one befor but it was a vypyr. Now I need to try out this peavey amp when I go to pick out my amp :) thanks a lot man have you ever played one before? If so how do they sound?

It'll sound more like marshall then the MG. If you throw an OD pedal in front of it for a little boost it'll sound really good and you'll get the bad religion guitar tones from the late 80's to early 90's. (Suffer to stanger then fiction-ish). I've had my peavey for over 3 years now and i've played in a couple bands, played dozens of shows, and it still plays like new. it's a well built amp and for that price you're getting a MUCH better build cab too that's actually full sized.

I understand your train of thought, but don't be so narrow minded about used gear. There are new gear duds as well as used duds. Yes you have 30 days or a warranty card, however you find out the warranty only covers this this and this where as you have a problem with that and it's not covered.

A good solid amp will last the test of time. Why do you think used JCM 800s are still expensive.

Also, I apologize for this assumption, but I take it your a little new to the game. As you take your musical journey, you will learn what we have learned.
