signature guitars = poser or no??

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Who the flip cares what anyone thinks. Does it work for you? Does it have features you like? That's how I approach it.

That being said, I would love to have a Jeff Beck Strat and a Phil Collen PC1. Both of those guitars are amazing players and work for me right off the rack as I have played them both.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Yeah seems to be the stigma of buying a sig instrument isn't very strong here. If it suits your needs/wants then who cares? I would also love a Jeff Beck Strat or a Thunderhorse Explorer. And I already play a Les Paul...

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

There are 3 signature models I like, which interest me a lot. The G&L Jerry Cantrall Rampage. The old Ernie Ball Axis and the Ibanez Fireman . All 3 are diff from most other guitars. And the reason I would want them is to play them.

Some big name blues players used other guy's signature guitars, like T Bone walker with a Barney Kessel, and Jimmy Rogers with a Lucille. Didn't seem to bother them.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

When you get down to it, guitars are just tools. If a particular guitar has the features and the tone you like, go for it regardless of who's name is on the headstock.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

This is why I like those Brendan Small Gibsons actually. Very sleek looking and the only thing connecting them to the show are the names of the instruments, otherwise nobody would ever guess, and the names for them aren't beyond gibson's traditional guitar names either. No weird signature or logo or carved pickguard or anything. Like as much as I would probably love the EMTY blackouts, I can't get over that big SEVEN looking up at me from the side of the pickup. I still don't know why they put that there, it's not like anyone else but the person playing it can see it, so I figure all it is doing is turning people away rather than bringing them in but that is just me. And that is not like me feeling like I'm a poser or wanting to be "unique" by playing something everybody else plays, it's just purely aesthetic reasons. But like pretty much any signature fender ever made, tons of gibsons including the Wyldes, the Ibanez sig models, hell yeah sign me up. So long as the thing just ain't that goofy looking.

I'm with you on the Brendon Smalls models. Different color schemes on classic models but don't scream out "I CAME FROM A CARTOON" anywhere.

I also am guilty of liking the Grace Potter Flying V for the same reason. Just a cool color scheme. I couldn't tell you one song Grace Potter does though.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

I'd say you're a poseur if you're buying the guitar because a certain guitarist plays it, rather than liking the guitar itself.

OR, if you buy it because you like the looks but don't play it because it doesn't fit you.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

It's the feature set that counts for me. For example, I love the Robert Cray Strat, but thats because its one of the few hardtail Strats available.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Yes, for me too it is the features that are unique to the guitar and which interest me,and which I know I wont be able to mod on another guitar. In short I would be using the same principles if I was buying any other guitar.

I don't like Halestrom at all but I love Lzzy Hale's white Explorer. If I could choose to have her or the guitar for a night, I'd choose the Gibson.

+1 on both, as well as saying exactly what I would say too. I haven't heard any music from Grace Potter but that V is really classy. The Nancy Wilson Nighthawk is pretty nice too.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

I think people who ask this question to begin with are not the target buyer for sign guitars. There are some guitar hobbyists and aspiring guitarists whose interest in guitar is focused around a few particular players, like I see Clapton and John Mayer come up as primary influences a lot on guitar forums that have a lot more beginners that this one tends to have, and for people like that, a sig guitar gets straight to the point. They're like single-artist guitarists. Other people buy sigs also, but I think devotees / obsessives are the bread and butter buyers.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Pete Townshend also uses older EC signature models that he mods with piezos.

A lot of recognizable pros used EC strats, the features he added were useful to a big number of players.

In my opinion, the only time you look like a poser is when you start to act like you think you are the artist in question. Short of that. rock on.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Other than my intense neutrality for the band Blink-182 and their music I would love to own a Tom Delonge Fender Strat in graffiti yellow. Just plug in, turn up, and play.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

im 37, so not too old, but I still believe rock and roll is about freedom, so I say to hell with what anyone thinks about what kind of guitar you have...just turn it up and rock!!!

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Some guitarists are stuck in a mindset that tells them, to play in a particular musical style, you must use a _______________ (fill in the blank). For another genre, that same mindset dictates a different guitar.

An idiot of my acquaintance is forever changing guitars at disadvantageous prices. For Metal, this guy feels the need for black pointies. For Blues, he prefers a traditional outline and "vintage" style pickups. The concept that a well-chosen Les Paul, SG or a Superstrat could do the majority of his repertoire seems to have eluded him completely.

I play death metal on a Telecaster with a single humbucker in the bridge. Way more comfortable to play than the Beasts and Warlocks and whatnot.

Re: signature guitars = poser or no??

Great replies all! Yeah, Ill reiterate that I am a WDiM fan, but dont want the guitar to "show my fanboiness". I dont like that and have shied away from gear for that purpose, and yeah I SURE as HELLo wouldnt do the guitar justice.. But I do love the graphic and the guitar itself. Surely wouldnt pay full price for one, but at a great deal...
I really like the Cantrell guitar too! The good thing about that (and alot of the PRS' as above) is the fact that they are very understated that they are a sig guitar. Just a great guitar with a name on it. Les Paul like. I was just wondering about the WDM cuz the graphic is pretty clear of who it is, like a red kramer with white and black stripes.
