Does anyone actually know what a 10K pup sounds like?

Yup. I have a 10k A3 High Order. I think Duncan 59' when I think PAF cause I played one for years. The HO has a touch more compression and is much more aggressive. GREAT pup. Tone retains air but doesn't have that clear chimey PAF twang of the 59'. The 10K and my hybrid are my favorite buckers.

Tough call but for my money I'd stick to a 8.75-9k scatterwound, slightly mismatched, double screw A3 59' for an overwound paf if you want clarity and twang with a bit more drive.

The A3 will add more mids than the A5, but won't lose as much bass as the A2. Radiussing the screws and using an A3 will add fullness and aggressiveness, helping to keep the winds down.

After that you should just go hybrid.

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

I'M EASY...

1) Magnet -- not an issue, I have every kind there is. I can swap.

2) Spec -- I'm easy, anywhere from 9k to 11k

3) Would prefer plain enamel to formvar but will bow to will of majority

4) Would prefer either zebra, or covered double cream (so they can legally get it out the door) or covered whatever (gold, nickel, chrome), but can live with double-black.

5) 4-conductor

6) I'm going to be out of town from Dec 21-28 so you may not hear from me for a week.

QUESTIONS:

a) How do we pay/pool the money?

b) What sort of tone will the wind be geared toward, e.g., what existing pickup's tone will it most closely resemble? (Plump like A2P, thick bottom like 59, thin and bright like Jazz, smooth like Seth, you get the idea...)

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

I am in too, but I would like to know if there is any chance to get it to Europe.

About the specs we should be serious and If an expert recomends A5 then I think we should stick to it.

As far as I go:

Wax poting
No tremspacing
Nickel
I rather 4 conductors.
I don't have an opinion about scatterwind or not.(may be not scaterwind would help in high gain situations)

I would also like to know about the pay/pool money issue.

What I would like is a hotter '59. I'm not sure I'd want a 11-12k (thats essentially a C-5 in my book), but ten would be okay. I would like a cover, but the other options I would be willing to defer to my forum bros.

BTW, I thought Stevo had some clips of a 10k Deco with a2?

I can't commit right now , but if you give me a couple of weeks after Xmas, I can probably swing it.

Payments could be mailed to me if we decide to do yhis. Maybe set a target date in January for getting money in. (assuming it comes together)

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

If you make it with the same wire as the 59', I think you should include a coil offset or it might sound too middy. With a thinner wire (like the Custom), I guess it'd be a little bit thin and trebly at 10K, even with symmetrical coils.

I'm IN!!!!

Like whoah.

GOTTA be 10K.
GOTTA be zebra (don't care about a cover or not, I'll take it off if it has one)
DONT CARE about wire or legs.

But its gotta be a 10K 59-ish PAF.

WOW, this is incredible. Count me in, for sure. I'll paypal if possible, or mail in payment.

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

Sounds like a great idea, I probably won't be able to do it because of shipping and paying. But you never know...
As for pickup cosmetics, zebra with nickel covers
I don't know enough about pickup construction to really give a proper opinion, so i'll leave ya to it.

I'mnot part of the 10K militia but I want 1!! Scott let me know and I can send payment whenever.

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

You know with Glow in the Dark bobbins, it'd bring back memories of the SD forum every time you play it, and it'd get one over on DiMarzio, as it'd look double creme while it was light...

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

Nah, zebra with each bobbin half cream/half black.

Double-screw would be cool...

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

Can we get it with a Maple fretboard and black sharkies? Sorry couldn't resist... Memories of the Limited run on the JCF we tried to get going. But seriously, can we get this with Maple and black sharkies? :D

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

Cool initiative! I'm not buying one, I can't afford it right now and do not have a guitar to put them in, but I think this is a really cool offer from SD! :notworthy

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

Must haves:
4 cond wire
Short Feet
std polepiece spacing

Would really like
A5 mag
Double Cream (under nickle cover would be fine)
Old school touches like wood spacers vintage style wire etc.
Extra long lead wire.

The rest I could live with either way. If the must haves are met I'm in. What the hell. A killer pup is a small price to pay to put my money where its at. I can make the rest of the mods or have MJ do them on my nickel.

Point well taken but I bet combined with an A5 it would be OK. I would prefer a little under 10k with the vintage wire. I agree that 10k with thinner wire would be pretty bright. Probably closer to a Demon

I agree with the above.

The only thing is that maybe mismatched coils would be a good idea to retain some clarity lost due to high resistance values. But MJ should be the final judge, I completely trust her skills!

Would be ok with wax potting, but still I think non-wax potted pickups sound better. Anyway if MJ thinks it is ok to have them non-wax potted, I think we'd be better off without the wax!

I would want either zebra, or double cream under non-gold covers (any would do). Should we ask for gold screws and slugs? They sure look different. I am not saying we should be still it is an idea to think about!

Scott_F could we do paypal? If you could arrange that I think that would be the fastest thing no?

And regarding question b above, I would go with the majority but ideally would want a HOT pearly gates sounding bucker.

Best,

B

PS. Scott_F would it be possible to put up a list of people who are interested? Maybe a deadline?

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer

We probably just need to keep it simple where possible. Let MJ choose the wire...

We can start accepting money, IF we all agree to specs, on like Jan 1 until Jan 15. That will allow for people to mail in payments. I volunteer to act as point man.

Repeat, no money until we agree on specs. Then, we ought to get Seymour and MJ's opinions.

I'll post a list of people once we agree on specs.
