Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

Also, some polls could be run in parallel I think.

Once we get the format established, I don't see that being to confusing. It's ultimately up to Trevor. I don't know what all he has planned for this. I'm guessing there will be a couple different polls to determine the wind. Probably start with something like vintage, medium, or hot outputs, then another to narrow it down more specifically.

Another poll for pole piece type.

Another poll for magnet type.

Then if it's a bucker, there will have to be a poll to determine color.

Probably start with something like vintage, medium, or hot outputs, then another to narrow it down more specifically.

I think that could even be multiple questions, now that we have the option of mismatched coils. In fact, I'd be surprised if a matched-coil humbucker came out of this little experiment.

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

I think a versatile neck hybrid of mixed wire gauges to compliment a 59/custom or Brobucker would be sweeeet.

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

With a humbucker, it could be interesting to experiment with construction of the pickup in another way, to facilitate magnet swaps.

Bolt the coils to your standard baseplate with the poles sticking thru. Have a second cover on the bottom (plastic or metal?) to hold the magnet in place - that way you could remove this cover & pop in a new mag without disturbing the wiring or coils on the pickup. The trial and error would be in making sure the new magnet mount assembly didn't negatively affect the sound of the pickup.

Say, shop floor custom of choices for coils (matched or mis-), assembled on this easy mag-swappable baseplate, with a collection of interesting magnets? The MagMule (tm) is born!

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

Just a suggestion, but I'd probably limit the rest of the poles to 4 days or so from here on out. If we go a week between each pole, it could take 3 months to finish this thing up.

I can do the rest of them a bit shorter for sure. I was anticipating a busy week, and wasn't sure how much time I would have to devote to it. I'll run the rest for 4 days starting this coming Sunday.

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

I voted humbucker. I concur, there's a hole to be filled for 24 fretters and users of really hot bridge pickups. An all Duncan version of my fabled Demon/490R hybrids, or something in the realm of the Breed or Liquifire would be cool, make it double screw.

A 20K+ 44 awg PE on FS bobbins with a big fat ceramic is my wet dream.

A tele '78 is a very cool idea.

How about a tele bridge pickup with adjustable poles wound to 8~9K? A real tele P90.

Re: User Group Pickup Specs Poll #1

i agree on the 24-fretter hybrids, or any other hybrids, using 2 screw coils.
wish i'd done this on the last one.

I just heard a story on the radio mentioning that American companies should be more democratic. Well, here it is in action. The Seymour Duncan company is fantastic!

Ok, let's dream a little bit: 2012 SDUGF Vintage set

Neck p'up:
1. Screw coil: glass filled nylon bobbin, AWG #42 PE wire, no reliced Ant neck coil.
2. Screw coil: glass filled nylon bobbin, AWG #42 PE wire, Seth Lover neck coil
Short-legged baseplate, 4-conductor, A4 magnet, no potting, cryogenic treatment, Golden screws

Bridge p'up:
1. Screw coil: glass filled nylon bobbin, AWG #42 PE wire, no reliced Ant bridge coil.
2. Screw coil: glass filled nylon bobbin, AWG #42 PE wire, Seth Lover bridge coil
Short-legged baseplate, 4-conductor, A4 magnet, no potting, cryogenic treatment, Golden screws

No logo, so everybody can position the p'up the way they sound best for their ears just by rotating'em 180°, no soldering required. :cool2:

I'll have to think a little bit for the Modern set.

How do you like it so far? ;)
